This week, it's the plumber's turn. While Jim Carrey's announcment as Dr. Robotnik was a strange decision, this entire movie is one. Starring Sonic's rival from the 90's... Yeah, back in the day Sonic was not big enough to get a live motion picture like this even though the technology was already capable.
However it is cool we have a live motion Sonic movie now, and not only that, it is great, and the biggest hit in terms of video game movies.
This Mario movie was a big disappointment success as well even though the measurements were different.
This came out when the TMNT movies were still huge, even Double Dragon was, and I remember liking those a lot. I have to see it again because I don't remember anything.
By looking at the trailer I recall seeing King Koopa aka Bowser and thinking it was cringey, I think that was the first time I realized what cringey even was.
I'm surprised they went for Daisy and not Peach because Daisy is the one Mario end ups with in the real franchise as seen in Super Mario Land 2.
I actually can't wait to see it again because it does look radly weird, it doesn't take itself seriously, and something tells me that's the way to approach it too.

When your movie is so bad that Nintendo vows never to make a live-action film ever again (well at least until Detective Pikachu was made). I was always going to watch this movie at some point ever since I saw Cinemassacre review it years ago. Here's my thoughts on it: "This is probably the movie that made it so that every video game movie adaptation would not follow the game whatsoever. This film takes such weird liberties all the time, it does not resemble the game well at all. Just look at Luigi for example, why is he without a mustache when all of his video game appearances has him rocking one? Why are the enemies so weird looking, and why do they have a human form. Shit does not make any sense. The mushrooms, or should I say fungus looks like something out the Alien franchise. Why is the plot revolving around dinosaurs and a meteorite, why could it not be a simple plot that kids around the world could recognize and say, that is Super Mario Bros. Instead we have this weird mutated mess of a film that resembles a shitty science fiction exploitation movie from the 80's more than anything else. The fact that the director wanted a more adult film is ridiculous considering the source material has always been very available to young kids. The best part of the whole movie was the end credit scene." 1/5 it sucks. Watched this shit on Vimeo if anyone's interested in watching or rewatching it. The quality ain't the best, but for this kind of filth it's acceptable.

Did you watch the Rental Review? James had one just for the movie as well. They kinda explain that they did include some stuff from the game, but you have to notice it.
Still awful,however.

Yeah I watched the Rental Review when it came out. I like them even though a lot of people don't. I think we went over that before, but I don't understand why people don't like them. I love the commentary even for movies I have no intention to see.

I have a feeling that this is a case of the squeaky wheel whining too much.

If you ever visit r/TheCinemasdacre, then you'd be surprised how many of the so-called fans just hate Cinemassacre now. It's just sad to see.

Balder, that's why I'm not a big fan of Reddit, and I'm here. The negativity over there is off the charts.

It's weird because most fan subreddits tend to be quite positive, but TheCinemassacre is toxic as hell. I mostly use reddit for news and entertainment though. Real discussions aren't worth my time there. Everyone knows the best discussions take place here. Where else could you discuss The Incredibles vs Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within while checking the latest Corona virus stats?

What happened is that the directors had no interest in the franchise itself: they had their own idea for a cyberpunk movie, coming from their Max Headroom experience, and tried to cram it in Super Mario to very bizarre results. What is more disappointing is that the approved script, the one that the actors had agreed upon, was for a fantasy movie not unlike The Princess Bride, which is just what Super Mario is.
Here is a detailed history of the production and how terrible everything was:
