The new controller is truly trash, it looks like an overly cheap piece of shit that will likely be overpriced. At least they kept the twin shooters thumbsticks placement, but overall it looks horrendous, terrible coloring too. The PS4 controller was the closest thing they had to perfection if it wasn't for the terrible triggers that fast forward media automatically, the underwhelming d-pad, and the completely useless touchpad that no one asked for. I'm extremely disappointed.

I actually kind of like the look of the design to be honest. I have a dark blue PS4 one, and I think I'd like one of these with that same color combo. I would like the D-pad, and other buttons to be classic black, but there will probably be a few different iterations. That said, I do wish we could skip iterating controllers for a generation, so I could save some cash. None of the features here seem like critical things that are needed, or substantially change things. Would be nice if the PS4 controller were compatible, even if they quit making them going forward. ( stratogustav - I was amused by your comment at the end there. Was almost 'The DS4 was almost perfect, except all these ways that it was garbage and I hate it. )

Imperial Khador Yeah man, I hate the new curves, they can never get it right. What sucks more is that I probably will have to get used to it, whether I like it or not. If PS4 controllers are forward compatible I will be thrilled. I would rather use those too. Good thing, most of my favorite games are played with steering wheels, light guns, and fight sticks anyway.

It is funny that you mention this with such hate stratogustav. scipioafricanus and I were discussing this last night. I don't hate it as much as the people who loathe it. I'm sure there will be more color variations in the future, so if you don't like it, they will fit your fancy. I just hope the white isn't glossy, because that just gets gross after a while.
I'm not a PlayStation person, but I'm happy they are going with the USBC-C input. I absolutely love my Switch Pro Controller, and the charging (which is not that often, since the battery life is very long) time is very fast. We were more or less discussing the debate over using AA batteries like the X-Box controller does as opposed to a lithium battery.

dschult3 Maybe I had too much good expectations, and that's what let me down. My expectations for the PS4 controller were low, and they end up impressing me despite all the terrible decisions that were made with that controller. This one may not be as bad as it looks. It is not just the bad coloring, that's easily fixable, it is many other things: - I dilkike they kept the D-Pad underperforming 4-way blindspot design - I dislike the circa 2000 Nokia buttons - I dislike that they kept the triggers that force you to put the controller upside down - I dislike that they didn't get rid of the stupid useless touch pad - I dislike the barebones thumbsticks so you can spend on third party caps - I dislike that the traditional sexy ergonomic comfort lines were substituted for the sake of getting a larger ugly grip This doesn't look like a Sony product anymore. I have no idea who are the new people working there, but they are definitely out of touch. This looks like some kind of low end Logitech joke, that doesn't match the kind of sophistication we have grown used to getting from Sony. We are forced to accept it I guess, maybe they will come up with something better next, but if they are already heading in this direction, we can't expect much improvement.

TBH it doesn't looks all that different ergonomically to the PS4 controller. The only things that are radically changed are the aesthetics and that they seem to have done away with the touch pad, which is a good thing.
It's a shame the D-pad is still the same, though. I've never liked Sony's D-pad. So stiff, disjointed and sluggish.

Really none of the current gen consoles have great dpads, although none of them are terrible either atleast.

I did have that issue with my Switch Pro d-pad for a while where left sometimes registers as up, but it seems to have worked itself out with time. I actually quite like the Sony D-Pads. I've never experienced the dead zone/blind spot stratogustav mentions. The Sony d-pads are a single piece, just with 4 bits raised above the surface of the controller. They aren't like the Switch Joy-Con buttons, which are fully separate. Then again, stratogustav plays waaaaaay more fighting games than I do, which would give him both a much greater opportunity to see the issue, and probably more wear and tear on the D-pads that might cause such an issue.

I've never experienced the dead zone/blind spot stratogustav mentions.. They do exist, but only on fighting games or bullet hell can you really tell. However even then, developers have found many ways to work around it by changing the inputs window timing on negative edge release button controls, and adjusting movement to frames per second moves more manageable to players. The software basically fixes the hardware, so they make it work, and that's a good thing.

I think the new design looks pretty good. It's obvious that they're moving in a more ergonomic direction. The PS3 controller was a misstep in my opinion because they almost nothing to modernize the PS2 controller. The PS4 was a big step and now the PS5 controller looks pretty awesome.

Yeah, PS3 when compared to the PS4 controller feels like a toy. PS4 is damn near perfection for me. Hard to top that one.

A big issue with that controller is that the thumbsticks seem to wear down to easily. I don't play that often with them, but both of my brother's controllers have the outer layer rubbed off. Also the light on the back is beyond stupid. Trying to watch movies with that thing in the room is an annoyance. Always have to hide it under a shirt or something. Besides that it's pretty damn good.
