This looks great stratogustav. I'm looking forward to watching this one. It's quite accessible too as it's both on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, and you can find it on Dailymotion as well.

centipede thanks for posting this. That's a great cover for it. Balder hey thanks for pointing that out. Those are good news because normally these type of movies are hard to come by. I have to say that this came as a surprise. Recently I have been watching many new movies. Blockbusters, and high production costly made Hollywood movies. Some better than others. All modern and with elaborate professional teams of people behind them. Yet, I didn't find much satisfaction from watching them. That made me decide to watch something different for a change. This came up in my recommendations. I noticed it had an English translation. But it was originally on Mandarin, with subtitles. I tried the dub, and it was a hard watch. So I tried the subtitles, and it was easier to follow the movie that way. Initially my expectations weren't much, but as soon as the movie kept going, I noticed how much artistic thought was put into this. It has some comedic moments, some ethical questions, some philosophical topics, and some life reflecting messages presented in a very entertaining light hearted presentation. I was impressed how much better this experience was than many of the elaborate movies we see today, and it made me appreciate it even more for that reason. After it ended, I was so satisfied that I was left with the desire to watch more. Luckily I noticed that there are many sequels, and it doesn't surprise me considering how fun these movies are. With a little bit of immersion and open mind, you can get a lot from these movies. I definitely recommend it to anyone that want something different, and are tired of watching the repetitive formats we see in movies nowadays.

It's been years since I watched this but I'm pretty sure I enjoyed it a lot. If I recall, I liked the training sequences more than the fight scenes. I think I will give this a rewatch on Amazon.

Funny you say that because I forgot I have the DVD. lol It's only dubbed on Amazon Prime but doesn't matter for me since I have it.

I watched it on Netflix, and they had it subbed there. They also have many of the sequels, but they can take them away any time.

I love Shaw bros flicks, along with the other absurd martial arts flicks from the period. This one in particular has such a positive vibe, with the theme of humility and self-improvement being conveyed more convincingly that most other films of it's ilk.

I actually remember watching these kind of films at some point when I was a kid, they used to show them on TV, and I remember loving the high jumps, and crazy fights. Now I can actually understand what's going on, so I'm getting an extra depth of appreciation for the genre.

I've had a lot of shit to watch over the last couple of weeks, but I finally got to this movie now, and while it started out kind of disappointing, it sure made up for a poor start with the middle and meat of the film. Here are my thoughts on it:
"Time to watch an old school kung fu classic. The 36th Chamber of Shaolin certainly shows its age in many regards such as the editing, pacing and choreography, but it has enough fun things about it that makes it worthwhile. The fact that it is pretty influential also makes worth watching. The strongest quality of this movie is without a doubt the awesome training sequence. It basically makes up half the film, whereas normally these training sequences takes up 15 minutes tops. That is what I like so much about this film; it takes its time to tell a story throughout the training to become a martial arts master instead of having the final fight be the main course. The last couple of fights at the end of the movie are just a cherry on top for me. They are at least much better than the rough first fight of the film, which lowered my expectations a lot. Glad to see that the film eventually overcame those expectations though. I think movies like this are best enjoyed when one is in a carefree state of mind; where one just take in whatever is on screen and enjoy the ride. Full of fun times, but is lacking in substance to make it a full-blown classic in my opinion." 3.5/5

That's a very honest review Balder, I'm glad you liked it. It was the same for me at the beginning, I actually thought it was going to be a hard watch until things started to pick up, and it turned out a satisfactory experience that got me interested in the genre.

Thanks man, if you're interested in one of the best martial arts movie ever made, check out The Raid. We even had a discussion on it a few years ago, but I don't think anyone but me had watched it.

The Raid: Redemption is a great movie. It's amazing, and I wish more people would watch it. People are so hesitant when a movie is not in English.
