Been playing this game off and on now for over a year and completed it today. At times it's really fun and engaging. It heavily reminds me of Uncharted since it's a third person cover-based shooter that has the same type of puzzles and platforming. Everybody loves Lara Croft since she's iconic as hell, but this new rendition is awful in my opinion. I can excuse the first game in this new "Survivor trilogy" since it was her origin story, but by this game she should've resembled her iconic badass self, however, she's still this weak-ass bitch and it's pathetic. I usually love icy settings and while this game is breathtakingly beautiful at times, it doesn't really stand out that much from the first game. It still is platforming and exploring in a forest environment for the most part. The combat is alright for the most part, but nobody buys these games for the gun play. There are a couple of smaller things that this game has expanded on from the first game such as crafting, upgrading weapons/skills/equipment and challenges/collectibles. The first game had these, but they weren't that bloated, but this game has way too much of it in my opinion. It bogs down the experience to collect all of these pointless resources to make medicine, ammo, camp sites etc. when they should've have been collected instead and then just cut out the crafting parts. I hate that they have different difficulty settings now since the first game only had one. Having one difficulty setting makes the game feel very balanced and fine tuned, now it's either tedious or too easy. The story is said to be great by IGN. This is surprising to me because I thought every character and every plot point was dog shit. It served as a reminder to how inferior games are at telling a story compared to other mediums in general. Overall though, the game is a lot of fun, but way too bloated to be a fantastic one. I just wish they'd cut out the challenges, boring collectibles and awful writing, and instead gave us something memorable. Anyone remember the original Tomb Raider game from the 90's? The artifact, the characters and the settings were pretty damn memorable there. I kept forgetting what I was supposed to find in this game (The Divine Source or some shit). The original game had us fighting demons from Atlantis, dinosaurs, an Atlantic clone of yourself and you finding pieces of an Atlantic tech device that can teleport people and turn them into hybrid demons. You visit an underground pyramid, several sphinxes, old Greek god chambers and ancient sewer systems. That game is a masterpiece. The puzzles in that game had you actually think and try before completing them.
Also... why the hell can you not dual-wield guns in this game. It makes no sense to have Lara Croft not being able to dual-wield when it's one of her defining traits. 3/5 whatever... Going to play through the story DLCs and maybe collect some more of the pointless collectibles to stimulate my gamerscore hunger.

I'll just quote my review from the "What are you playing" thread: Playing through Rise of the Tomb Raider. This game is kind of a mess, isn't it? It's very directionless, in the sense that Crystal Dynamics don't really know what this series is about anymore. See, Tomb Raider now has every bland mechanic from current AAA games: - Crafting; - Hunting; - Character progression (XP levels); - Quests; - Collectathons; - Buy new items (luckily, in-game only); - Stealth; - Cover-shooter fights. That's just too much. I feel like I'm playing any The Last of Us wannabes. The previous game (2013) already had some of those, but they weren't as present as they are now - the stealth is now kind of a focus and I almost feel like I'm playing a bad Metal Gear V clone. The crafting is now much more needlessly expanded, with many more weapons and items to craft; I feel like the character progression was also expanded, and Tomb Raider really is a series that doesn't need character levels or XP points. You killed that enemy stealthly? More XP! Was it a headshot? Even more XP! Man, Lara is really a psycho in this one. And the collectathon aspect is really out of hand, each map has a lot of small useless things to distract you from actually playing the game. So, about the core of the series, exploration and platforming, how is it? Well, the game is very linear, but at least they've added some "secret tomb" areas that are cool to explore; sometimes, just some very few times, you get to a more open area with a central puzzle to solve, and these ones might remind me of the classic games - but they're very short. The platforming, on the other hand, is messed up. The jumping is so automatic that it became a problem: there's no difference between a standing jump, a running jump or a sprinting jump; what makes her jump closer or farther is if the game identifies some ledge for her to grab. Consequently, I never know if I can do a jump or not, since there's not a consistent distance covered by her jumps. Sometimes, the game misses to identify a ledge that is right in front of me and in my reach; other times, it will bug itself to reach a ledge that was clearly out of my reach. So yes, the exploration in not great and the platforming is terrible, but look at all that other bland non-Tomb Raider stuff! The story is uninteresting, serious-business all the time, and Lara is just not a good character here - she still has that hesitant, fragile aspect from the beginning of the last game, which doesn't make any sense considering how much of a psycho she is in the game itself. I vastly prefer the confident Lara of the other series (both the Eidos one and the previous Crystal Dynamics trilogy). So, in conclusion: 2013 introduced a lot of unnecessary mechanics that at least were light enough, so it was still a fun action game; this one put more of a focus in those mechanics while adding many more other unnecessary ones. Do I like it? Well, as a huge fan of the series, I still like it enough to keep playing, but if this wasn't a Tomb Raider game I would probably not be playing it. This Super Bunnyhop video from 2015 describes perfectly the problem: "Tripwire boobtraps, throwable distraction bottles and the ever present stealth option means that much of The Evil Within is basically The Last of Us." Rise of the Tomb Raider also has every single one of those mechanics and more trendy ones. This is as bland as it gets.

Cervantes we pretty much have the same opinions on this game, which is surprising since most people seem to love this game. Fuck, IGN gave it a 9.3/10 two times. I'm glad to see someone else express the same disappointment.

I have the game but never finished it. The exploration and missions are a mess.
Tomb Raider 2013 is one of my favourite games of that generation. The gameplay, platforming, combat and story were all fantastic. I loved how lara starts off as this fragile daddy's little girl who screams at the sight of insects but towards the end she becomes this warrior every one's running away from. Loved the supernatural aspect of the story and the world.
But Rise of the Tomb Raider was just annoying to navigate through. The level designs to the combat were not balanced well at all. The game just felt like homework.

Exactly, The game encourages exploration and is necessary to do so to level up weapons and items but at the same time it punishes you for doing so with tedious level design and running around in circles.

The instinct function or whatever it's called (where you highlight items around you) is a horrible feature. Sure it's necessary when the game is designed to be a chore and find collectibles, but it slows down the game to a halt. I'd like to progress the game and have a smooth experience, but half the time I'm in combat and the other half is for pressing down the thumbstick to highlight items around me.

I absolutely love this game. I played Tomb Raider 2013, and it was great too, I actually played it twice, and I could probably play it again. However Rise Of The Tomb Raider blew my mind of how engaging it was. There is really something special about how natural it feels to platform, climb, hang, zipline, swim, and shoot with Lara, on top of having a map like that to play around, and collect, Rare style. I feel it was impactful for me because when I played it the first time if I'm not mistaking by now, I was coming from a marathon of beating Tomb Raider 2013, Uncharted 1, Uncharted 2, Uncharted 3, and Uncharted 4, all in a row. I loved all those games, but none felt as good as Rise Of The Tomb Raider. I think it was the contrast coming from those games right away, and I just couldn't put it down, I enjoyed every second of my first playthrough, everything felt very natural, the puzzles, the action, the exploration, and the adventure overall. At that point I felt like I was playing the best of all, like some kind of Metroid on rails. However I feel the order I played those games was a problem because after I played Rise Of The Tomb Raider I played The Last Of Us, and I feel a big reason why I don't like The Last Of Us is because I was coming from Rise Of The Tomb Raider, which in contrast, it felt exciting. The Last Of Us was the worse kind of contrast at that point because it felt extremely boring, and like I chore, but I managed to finish it too, and how disappointed I was with The Last Of Us made me appreciate Rise Of The Tomb Rider even more. After The Last Of Us I played The Order 1886 I think, maybe I'm not thinking those orders correctly because this was 3 years ago, and I was on a 5 month vacation, just doing a bunch of girls, going to the beach, and coming back to play non stop. The Order 1886 felt similar to The Last Of Us, just not as polished, and I didn't like it either, I can't even remember most of my playthrough, I was half asleep throughout that whole game. I remember deciding to call my friends from there to change pace, and in just a few days we went through Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls, and the excellent Until Dawn. All of which we finished with satisfaction. I remember wishing Detroit was out, but it wasn't. However out of all the games I beat at the time Rise Of The Tomb Rider was the most special of them all. I have lost count of how many times I have played through the game because it allows you to do that even through sections. The Croft Manor DLC on VR felt very cool at the time, but it was too short, and I end up wishing there was more VR content, however the Baba Yaga DLC, which was also short, is one of the best DLC I have played, one of the best levels in games probably since the N64, it felt Ocarina Of Time level of good. I really applaud Crystal Dynamics for this masterpiece they made, it is hands down one of the definite top games of the generation, and a very special entry in the series. Here are some images of the game:

wow I thought I was the only person in the world who didn't like The Last of Us. And it's actually one of the reasons I loved Resident Evil Revelations 2 soo much was because the game is pretty much The Last of us but flipped around so every thing is done right.

I haven't played Revelations 2, but I have been hearing it is a good game. Maybe I would have liked The Last Of Us under different circumstances, but it wasn't for me at the time. By the way, PS5 is just around the corner, Tomb Rider should definitely continue, I really like the new games. The lighting is looking pretty good: By the way, that cool technique they use in Rise Of The Tomb Raider to make a stage look bigger than it actually is was also used in the N64. You can test it by falling down from any cliff in the game. At simple view it looks deep, but once you fall you realize it is just right there. I personally remember seeing it first in 007 GoldenEye, in the first stage, where there are some snow mountains that look very far from the bridge water dam. They are actually quite far, but not as much as you initially expected. If you give Pierce Brosnan a bazooka missile launcher you can test they are actually closer than they look. And this was 1997: Cervantes Rise Of The Tomb Rider is basically a love letter to the N64, and it is one of the many reasons I like it so much. I'm surprised Balder says he doesn't like it since we established he is secretly in love with the console.
