So just the other day (apparently) Nintendo revealed the next Paper Mario title: Paper Mario The Origami King. It's coming out for the Switch in mid July of this year.
As someone who was introduced to the series right at the very beginning with the original masterpiece on N64 in 2001, I would like to sum up my observations on this new title:
-no partners -no unique NPCs -no RPG mechanics -no painted backgrounds (a real bummer!) -no fantasy environments -budget-title spritework rehashed from Sticker Star on 3DS; the 2D animation looks very limited in general, with little detail, and no effort to increase the number of frames of animation on characters. Very lazy. -And of course, typical of modern Paper Mario, a distinct visual gimmick: origami!
Now admittedly, the level design looked decent, with a handful of nifty looking arts-and-crafts styled environmental models (the design of the pine trees really stood out), and at least the 2D animation doesn't look like entry-level flash animation like we unfortunately got in TTYD and SPM.
Overall it was everything I was expecting a potential sequel to Color Splash to be like; gimmicky, streamlined, and soul-less. With that said, when it comes to kid's games these days, you can do a lot worse, but Paper Mario definitely deserves better. Seeing as how it's been almost 20 years since Paper Mario's glory days on the N64 though, it's safe to say we'll never get another Paper Mario like the N64 original or even TTYD; this is a dead franchise.

Did I missed a secret Direct? These kind of titles don't usually drop just like that. It is strange to see this kind of marketing from publishers nowadays. I'm not used to it. I kind of miss the conferences.

I loved A Thousand Year Door and is one of the Gamecube games I want back. But it seems to be the last of its kind. Every Paper Mario that came after it seem to be significantly different to the point where every one agrees that its not even close to being as good as the previous games.
But saying that this Origami King looks like it has a lot going for it. Just by the different locations It looks like the game is huge. And this is just a trailer. So it might end up being very good. We'll just have to wait and see.

I wonder if that little Eastern Egg at the end of the Paper Mario trailer with Samus' helmet is a hint for the release of Metroid Prime 4 later this year. Maybe the game is on a good track, and it won't take as long as we thought initially.
That game was already almost done, and they completely drop it because it didn't pass Nintendo's official seal of quality, so they had to restart all over again the development from scratch with another studio, this time Retro, which are the people that should have got it in the first place, specially considering they were thehe ones responsible for the original trilogy.

I'm pretty sure there are partners but they might not be very interesting. The one I saw in a screenshot was just named Bob-omb and had no distinct features. I don't think it was confirmed to have any RPG elements either, but given the last few titles it surely wouldn't be surprising if it doesn't. This is a -wait and see- for me, but I highly doubt I buy it at full price if it all depending on how it turns out. While they scrapped quite a bit of work I don't recall hearing that the game was anywhere near finished.

For those of us who loved Paper Mario on N64 or TTYD on GC and have been scratching our heads at the complete genre overhaul that Nintendo has since done with the Paper Mario franchise, this interview with Origami King's producer should shed some light on the predicament: www.videogameschronicle.com/news/paper-mario-producer-says-its-undecided-if-series-will-continue-to-move-away-from-its-rpg-origins/He suggested that it's unlikely that the series will ever return to its RPG roots given how financially lucrative the non-RPG entries (i.e. post TTYD) have proven to be. In addition, he said that his career philosophy as a game producer was strongly shaped by Shigeru Miyamoto, which says a lot right there. Basically, what I gathered from his reasoning was that this is the same mainstreaming/casualizing/ultra-bureaucratic BS that has been ruining Nintendo franchises since the Wii era. Sigh... But hey, you don't have to take it from me. Come to your own conclusions.

Well, for me personally. I enjoy the Paper Mario games since the one for the Wii.
I never played the GameCube one, or the N64 one, well, not that I remember, neither I played Legend Of The Seven Stars on the Super Nintendo, but I remember it was very popular.
I have enjoyed a lot the one for the Wii, Wii U, 3DS, and I'm looking forward to play the one on the Switch because I haven't done so yet.
However they are not something I care that much about, so if they want to go back to the old school type of games, which I imagine are different, I wouldn't mind if they do that because there is so much other stuff to play.
