Let me start with saying that my official rating for this movie is 9.7 out of 10.
It is cliché to say Martin Scorsese movies are good, but what can we do, they really are.
Joe Pesci performance alone is worth the entire movie. He falls so well into character you will never forget that performance once you see it.
Plus you can't go wrong with any movie with Robert De Niro in it. The dude makes everything better. His charisma is off the charts, even when he does bad things, and the same goes with Pesci.
What makes these mafia movies stand out is the realism. In real life all relationships drama usually centers around loyalty, and ultimately by circumstances, or coincidences, you end up being part of those relationships even if you were not actively looking for them.
Life's irony is well presented here, and from a karma standpoint you can see how malicious action always brings chaos to people's life.
You may get to enjoy the wave for a while, but one thing leads to another and bad ways usually bring bad results, and even if it wasn't based on real life, it still is because that's how real life is as well.
It has excellent cinematography too, when it comes to Scorsese it is basically a choreography, not of dancing, but of pure acting, including the extras.
You can enjoy the movie from beginning to end feeling like you read a good book because there is definitely poetry in the ways these scenes are presented, like the scene at the restaurant club with the lovers, where wives are not allowed that particular day of the week.
Obviously the dudes were bosses, but that comes with a price, their dignity, and their moral. It doesn't have to be that way, but in their eyes it is the only way they know because that's how they were raised, and they didn't see other option other than adapt to whatever circumstances life gave them.
It is hard to say if they ever had a chance to live otherwise because as a kid you don't choose where you will grow up, but they do have tough choices to make, and those all have consequences, that's the morality of it, and the irony as well because at the end no one can ever win if the time on Earth is limited for everyone, so doing our best is the highest we can all aspire.

It's been like 10 years since I've seen this movie, I remember liking it a lot but it's been too long to give it a rating.
