Oh hey, it's that other magician movie from 2006. I really don't remember this one much.

This movie will always be remembered as the movie that wasn't as good as The Prestige.

What's funny is that I'm one of the biggest Christopher Nolan fans, and I still prefer this movie over The Prestige.
One thing is liking a movie, and another rating it.
The Prestige is a good movie so I can give it a 9.1, which is higher than my official rating for The Illusionist that is 8.6.
But just because I rate The Prestige higher as a movie, it doesn't mean I like it more. I rate Saving Private Ryan a lot higher than 300 and I still like 300 more.
Funny how that works.
One of the reasons I like this movie more is because it has a very romantic vibe.
The Prestige feels like an early 1900s novel, while The Illusionist feels like a mid 1800s.
Which is funny to think about because The Prestige is supposed to take place a few years earlier if I remember correctly.
The entire comparison between both movies is ironically important in clarifying the strengths of The Illusionist.
First Edward Norton gives me more Illusionist vibes than Christian Bale gives me Magician vibes, and that alone makes a huge difference to me.
When you see a show on The Prestige you know you are watching a movie, but on The Illusionist it actually feels like you are watching an actual Illusion show.
The Prestige may give you a sense of mystery, while The Illusionist from the beginning feels straight up esoteric, in a spiritual paranormal sense, and to me that gives it the edge over The Prestige.
It is the entire science versus spirituality thing what makes the separation. Science is indeed magical, but at the same time a low consciousness way of explaining a more simplistic truth, which is the strange nature of our reality.
To me believing in ghosts is not crazier than believing in matter. The simple fact that matter exists is a wonder that make any other kind of wonder not surprising at all.
That's the strength of The Illusionist that will always make me prefer it over The Prestige, but I do appreciate the fact that both movies came at the same time, and that they both exist because together they share half of the same message Shakespeare once shared: "All the World's a stage."
Well done indeed.

This movie is up on Tubi TV on the US servers, however, it fucking sucks so don't watch it.
"I have always heard that The Prestige was the good magician movie that came out in 2006 and The Illusionist is just a pretender, and now after having watched both, I can confirm that The Illusionist is a complete waste of time and an embarrassment when you compare it to the before-mentioned movie. The Prestige took the time to give us relatable and realistic tricks (for the most part) so that we could actually get mesmerized into its world and when the plot twist emerges, you are actually taken aback. The Illusionist on the other hand does the exact opposite. It does not have a single relatable trick as everything is done with CGI and a lot of the tricks are not based in reality at all. The performances here are paper flat and I am bored by all of these awful characters. I honestly think Now You See Me was more entertaining despite also being a horrible magician movie. They should have kept it simple but effective, but instead went the route that lead to obscurity. The dreadful sepia tone does not do it any favors either." 1.5/5

That review is hilarious to me because the magic shows are my favorite part. I was mind blown by those shows. I know it is a movie, but with those they really got me because I really got into the movie. In fact, that's my favorite thing about the entire film, the whole romantic/spiritual vibe throughout the movie. The only reason I never list it as one of my favorite movies is because of the ending. The ending is suppose to clarify everything was just a trick. This, and this alone, made the movie look cheap for trying to put sense into the magic tricks, even showing notebooks with scientific explanations. I would had prefered that:
Sophie was actually murdered, and that Eisenheim committed suicide to be united with her, as the finale for his masterful season show.
My guess is that since in The Prestige the magician was commiting suicide at a constant basis people probably wouldn't had appreciated that either, but I would.
If the movie would had have such a tragic ending, if they would had cut it then and there, without having to explain what actually happened, this movie could easily be on one of my favorites, easily destroying The Prestige which it is a very good movie too.
