I've played both major versions of this game, the PS1 version The Great Escape and the PS2 version Revolution. I've beaten this game once in my childhood and I replayed it and beat it two days ago. My best friend and neighbor at the time had the PS1 version and we got for Christmas a PS2 along with Revolution. There are some differences between the games, mostly which is graphical improvements, but there are some levels that play out differently such as the water levels, however, they are for the most part the same game. I'd recommend the PS2 version though because it looks MUCH better than the PS1 version. It was my dad that introduced me to video games and Rayman, as it was one of his favorite games. He tried the second one, but never bothered to play it that much because it's not like the first game at all.
Rayman 2 is a 3D game with some open world aspects to it and while it's cool and all, I too really miss some of the philosophy that made the first game so damn good. Everyone who ever tried to beat the original game knows how difficult that game is, and most of that challenge lies in the platforming. In Rayman 2, the platforming is never that difficult and the enemies don't do that much interesting gameplay-wise. There are some level gimmicks that killed me a bunch of times when I played it again this year, but since there are no game overs and that the game is incredibly generous with checkpoints, there never is a dread of dying. My brother likes this game more than the original and he says this partly because the first game has no story and this game has a lot of it. The first game has a story but it's not prevalent at all, and that's just fine by me since the gameplay is what's important to me in that game. This game has a lot of story and characters, but none of it is all that interesting. The characters are cool and all, but the world building and narrative sure could be toned down in my opinion. What I love about this game however, is just how creepy and melancholic it is. The music, the characters and the places you visit are all just a bit off to give you a sense of unease, and it totally works.
I had fun replaying this game, but it's not like the first game at all, and even in it's own rights, it's not perfect. I think I'll give it a 3.5/5. I never collected all of the lums in my original run of the game, and I'll try to collect them all this time to see what happens.

I personally never got into the Rayman games for some reason. The first game as I remember felt like a generic platformer with good visuals and the second one was the same but in 3D.

I haven't played this since I rented the N64 version from Blockbuster.

That was a good video. Too often, you see guys doing reviews these days on You Tube who have a crappy mic speaking with a bunch of fillers like uuuuuuuuuuuuh, and soooooooo. Then they constantly repeat the same phrases over and over again. I don't know who is speaking in this video, but he did a great job. I miss CGR.

I have it on my PS1 Classic, I still have to try it, but it does look appealing.
