I've only played the PS2 reboot Shinobi that was in 3D. I first played it on a demo disc on the PS2 and I thought it was cool as hell. You're running around as an uber badass futuristic ninja that froze creatures with his sword and departed them synchronized in small cutscenes. A neighbor of mine bought the full game and sold it to me very cheaply. I liked it a lot, but I thought the whole time concept undermined the game for me. After playing it again and to completion back in 2015, the time limit is for the most part very fair, but for a ten year old, I saw it as unfair to both being able to die from damage and a time limit. The game looks cool as hell, but the gameplay is only okay. I'd rather play Ninja Gaiden over it.
As for the 2D Shinobi games, they all look stellar, but I haven't played any of them.

This is the best review from when CGR went to Patreon. It's brilliant.

Amazing games, this series deserve an entry for each title, they are all outstanding in their own way, even the Master System ones.

I highly enjoy all of the games I've played(Shinobi 1-3, Shadow Dancer, and Legions). The GG Shinobi games look better than I thought as well, might check those and the PS2 game out soon. I have the PS2 game but haven't played it yet, besides briefly years ago either as a rental or maybe on a demo disc.

One of my favourites as a kid. I was a bit annoyed with Shadow Dancer as a kid because you only had one hit point, but at least you had a cool attack dog. The best was Shinobi 3, and thankfully available on every MD comp I have.
Cyber Shinobi on the Master System was the pits.
