I'm a big fan of watching YouTubers fixing things. One of my favorites is Tronics Fix. He just put out this video for a spray that can clean the potentiometer. I don't believe his is a shill hack, because he has multiple videos out there showing you how to fix controllers when you need to do so vs. cleaning them. I'm thinking about buying some of this BW-100, since most of these controllers seemed to stop drifting with a simple spray.
If the spray doesn't work, he has plenty of videos talking about the various issues for the myriad of controllers out there.

Always nice to see some resources for this.
Aside from my Joycons, I'd never encountered this issue before. However, I had a roommate a few years ago who went through 4 or 5 PS4 controllers with drift (some of which I was able to fix). I have to assume that some of it depends of controller use. He mostly played either first person or third person shooters (usually online) and so he seemed to be a lot harder on his controllers than I am.
In the case of his PS4 controllers, it seemed to be the well-documented issue of the thumb stick coverings grinding down and then the bits getting stuck on the contacts underneath. Several of the ones I fixed were just a simple disassemble and cleaning.
I've often thought that the reason it seems more common with the joy cons is because they are a bit more of a small/delicate stick, and so don't stand up to wear quite as much.
I hope it doesn't happen to my PS5 controller. I like a lot of the nifty features with the dualsense, but they look like a nightmare to disassemble and re-assemble compared to the DualShock 4.

I've got 3 broken Xbox One controllers that all suffer from drift. Why can't companies just make a good ass controller that don't get these drift problems so easily. I've tried to fix them as well, but it only worked temporarily.

And 3 Broken XBox one controllers?!, Accessories from a modern gaming system shouldn't have problems this early let alone 3 of them. It's just unexceptionable for companies to sell us shit but we're accepting it and letting it be the norm. I first noticed the quality drop when I first got my Ps3. The controller that comes with he console wasn't the same as the one sold separately. The controller felt lighter and was made by a cheaper plastic which light would shine through it if you held it close to a light source.

I had my PSP suffer from this. I had to send it away for it to be fixed. So these days, even if I'm in a tight battle, I have to be mindful and gentle with the nub. KNowing how to fix it myself would have saved me something like a $100.

Yeah, I have had many game systems, and the only one this has been an issue with is the Switch, and maybe the Wii U, but that one went away on its own.
I heard the new PS5 has this issue as well, which is a real shame for Sony because I had never had that issue with PS4, PS3, PS2, or PS1, and I played those a lot.

I honestly don't think it is all due to build quality. People are using their controllers more than before. I'm wondering if drift is a combination of that and the push for technology to be even more responsive than in previous generations. When you add those two together, dirt build up can cause just the slightest of drift, even though there are layers of protection for the potentiometers. I suppose engineers have their work cut out for them.

I'm getting some drift with my only PS4 controller that holds a charge, will need to see if I can fix that. Of course it couldn't be one of the two that only lasts for an hour not plugged in.

I just bought a can, and I can confirm that it worked on my right JoyCon. I highly recommend giving it a try.

In the video, he does mention that if a part is worn, it isn't going to perform any miracles though. Give it a shot and let me know if it fixes any of your controller issues.

It has been about a month now, and I can happily say that the BW 100 spray worked. The lag hasn't returned. As a matter of fact, I had to use it on my Switch Pro controller, since a certain 4 year old in my house spilled something sticky on it. The left joystick would hold to the left once you pushed on it. One spray, and it was working perfectly. Balder, did you ever get a can? I'd like to hear from an X-Box user.

My dad has one of those large air compressors that I was going to use, but due to a lot of stuff, I haven't been home in months. Good thing you reminded me though since I'm going there soon if everything works out.

It has been over a year now, and I haven't experienced any more stick drift on my original Joycons. I can't recommend this stuff enough.

I recently got some downward stick drift in my Pro Controller. BW-100 was there to save the day, but then I saw this:
I wonder if the next gen will go in this direction. I'm sure everyone is praising it now, but I wonder what the problems will be in the future. Maybe it will be a permanent solution?
