So let's try this new concept; each week a member will choose a game to be discussed in a stickied thread. It will sort of become a "main game discussion" where we can go in-depth of the things we think of the game. It would be great if the members would choose a game that is at least somewhat known (something like Rayman). A game discussion about Firefly for the 2600 doesn't spark that much discussion because it's to obsure. But I'll leave that to the members to decide. I'll also leave a poll on a scale from 1-5 on how much you liked the game (of course this isn't very accurate, but it leaves sort of an impression).

Rayman still is one of my favorite early 32 bit games. Never could beat it.

Rayman still is one of my favorite early 32 bit games. Never could beat it. Neither did I, mate. I played it on my Saturn around 1998; I remember thinking it looked great (although not near as impressive as, say, Astal) and quite liked the gameplay - nothing too fancy. But I also remember having some trouble with the controls - maybe they were slippery or had bad momentum? I don't remember. What I know is that I stopped playing in a level with really slippery controls, probably the obligatory ice level. It was a rental, so I didn't have any interest in renting it again to see if I could get to the end. Nowadays, I actually do want to buy it just to have more 2d platformers on my Saturn. So, in conclusion, I remember it as an average game, albeit with great graphics when it was first released (not so much when I played it). By the way, I liked the thread idea. One thing I suggest is that, as is the case with Rayman, we try to think of games that were ported to multiple consoles, so people can give their different views depending on the port they played. I would suggest, for our next game, something like Prince of Persia (the original one). I played it on IBM PC; someone will have experienced it differently on the NES, SNES, Mega Drive etc.

Not a fan of the original at all, the only somewhat positive I can say is that it has relatively smooth animation and the pixelart is okay as far as the technical quality goes. The music I don't dislike but it's not memorable and nothing I want to listen to outside of the game. It did spawn two sequels I like though, Rayman 2 The Great Escape/Revolution and Rayman 3 Hoodlum Havoc, I have multiple versions of both and they're good.

This is my favorite singleplayer game of all time. I play it every Classic November until I beat it (only takes 3-5 sittings). It's an outstanding platformer that is challenging, yet rewarding. The music is not top 3 video game soundtracks of all time material, but it's lightyears better than the music from the sequels ( Armored Core Raven). I've only played it on the PS1, but as far as my knowlegde goes; the Saturn version is the best console version that isn't a port (and I'm getting that version to the next Classic November. It is a very difficult game indeed, which is probably why a lot of people don't like it. But for me, there never will be a better singleplayer game. And I enjoyed the the sequels The Great Escape and Hoodlum Havoc, but they never had the classic Rayman feeling. The two newest titles in the series got close however: Origins and Legends are some of my favorite modern games, and I hope they make a third installment. Cervantes what I will do is go down the member list from top to bottom in how many posts they've made. So next up is stratogustav.

As I see, every one of us have different impressions on the game, which is nice. I do have to emphasize that, when I played it in 98, I had already played some pretty impressive looking 2d games (the aforementioned Astal, Mega Man X4, Castlevania SotN, Guardian Heroes and others); also, I was never much of a fan of standard 2d platformers - I don't even like Mario all that much. Another factor was that some really impressive 3d games were coming out by that time (Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear, Resident Evil 2, Tomb Raider 2). When you put all that together, it's understandable that Rayman just felt "ok" to me. I would probably appreciate it more nowadays. By the way, another 32-bit 2d platformer that I remember playing at that same time was Gex, which I finished and remember liking it more. Unlike Rayman, I don't think Gex ever got a revival, did it?

One of those games like Banjo Kazooie that I never had the chance to play it. I would give it a try at least on the Hyperspin, I love platformers.

Love the concept as well as implementation of the rating system!
Unfortunately, Rayman is a series that has eluded me for quite some time. I've played some of the second installment via my 3DS as well as Origins but I can't speak definitively on either. They seem quite competent for the genre though.

It had a pretty good 3D release for the PS1 which I played a lot at my friend's house. Gex or Rayman? I know Gex had some 3D sequels which I never played, but, as I understand, they weren't too great. About the Rayman 3D sequels, I do remember seeing someone playing either the Dreamcast or the PC release of Rayman 2 in a store, and I thought the game looked awesome; I also had seen some reviews and remember they were all positive. Sadly, I never played it; now that I know it's available for the 3DS (I'm even watching the Undertow review right now) I may go after it, since it's one of those games I really wanted to have at the time but never got the chance.

Cervantes - some plusses to the 3DS port: - it's essentially Rayman 2 - Rayman 2 is as awesome of a 3D platformer as it looks - game is cheaper than a decent 6 pack cons: - it's essentially Rayman 2... and nothing else! - 3D is lackluster - Rayman feels slightly more natural in 2D. I stopped playing 2(3D) out of frustration because I didn't understand where to go, but don't let that stop you especially if you feel the urge to try it for yourself! PS. A note to the mods, please don't continue to sticky these type of threads as they take over view space for the standard user threads. Alternatively, if you can unsticky the threads that expire their week timeframe, that should do just fine.

Cervantes I meant Gex, but the sequels to Rayman were also all great except for the Rabbit games. teddykongcountry I'll let this thread be stickied until next week, then we'll start a new game discussion of the week. Seeing as only 3-5 threads get commented on every 12 hours, these stickied threads don't take up the whole view space.

Just wondering on what reasons someone can rate this a 1/5. Like this game is the equivalent of E.T. or Superman 64, if it gets one star.
