Rayman is one of my earliest gaming memories. I really enjoyed it, i never got too far into it I don't believe, but I was about 6 at the time, and still to this day I don't put much effort into finishing games.

I'm surprised to discover that I never commented on this thread about Rayman.
Out of all the 5th gen "CD quality" 2D platformers that I've played (which includes Astal, Mega Man 8, Mischief Makers, and Yoshi's Story even though those last two technically aren't "CD" quality), Rayman is definitely my least favorite. While there's nothing I hate about the game, I have never found myself wanting to go back and play it or listen to the soundtrack like I have with all those other platformers I just mentioned. The art direction, while creative and colorful, is also extremely simplistic and the character animation has a Newgrounds-esc flash animation look that heavily reminds me of the atrocious GCN and Wii sequels to Paper Mario 64. Additionally Rayman has probably the most straightforward, blandest, and uninpsired gameplay of any 2D platforomer I've played and is neither fast nor exciting, unlike Astal or Mischeif Makers.
But seeing as how Rayman was one of the earliest 32 bit platformers, I guess I can forgive the game somewhat for its shortcomings. Like I said I don't hate the game, but I don't get what the big deal about this game was, which is why I'm giving it a 3/5.
Rayman 2, however, is a completely different story; it's easily one of the best 3D platformers I've ever played and trumps the original in every way. I hope we talk about it sometime in the future.

Balder , which one would you recommend as your favorite in 2020? What do you mean? My favorite game is still Rayman (1995) if you're wondering about that. You should give it a try if you haven't. It's available pretty much everywhere since it's on PS1, PS store, Saturn, Jaguar and PC. As for my favorite games I've played this year, I guess I'll have to give it to Musha. I bought a reproduction cart on eBay and it's just as good as Mark said it was.

I was thinking about Legends on the Switch. Since you are the Rayman guy on the forum, I respect your opinion. So the first one is the best?

I actually installed Legends today to play with my nephew and man do I think that game is great. If you've played Origins, go ahead with Legends, it's fantastic. The 4 player co-op is such a treat in today's landscape of single player games. I'll always love the first game the most, but these modern Rayman games are much more forgiving while retaining the original's creativity and fun.

I've begun my yearly playthrough of this game, and I usually play through it in two sittings. It takes about 3 hours or so to finish the entire game once you know all the tricks. Even though I play it yearly, there are still parts of the game that gives me anxiety and that classic childhood anger (just the feeling though, not actual rage). After playing so many modern games where deaths don't really matter that much since you have infinite continues, you don't really feel the consequences of failing. Not that that's a bad thing, however, it's rewarding to win at a game where something was at stake. There are some jumps and platforming parts that do require a lot of skill, and while some people will find it unnecessarily difficult, it's one of the biggest reasons I have to come back each year because it's always a challenge and in contrast with Crash Bandicoot, the platforming never feels cheap to me. When you fall or get hit, it's your own fault, it's not some bad 3D depth perception bullshit.
Even though I've got no problem of getting lots of extra lives, I still feel the urge to perform as best I can because I do keep track of how many lives I've got once I finish the game. I keep these stats so that I can compare each year's playthrough and I see how I improve and deteriorate over the course of my life. I had an amazing run in 2018, which I might be my best of run of all time. Here's how many lives I've had each year since I started this tradition. I started in 2013, although I had beat the game before, but that's when I decided to play it yearly instead of some random time a year here and there.
2013 6 2014 19 2015 40 2016 39 2017 50 2018 62 2019 42
I think I'll do better than 2019, but we'll see.
Btw, I'm in disagreement with the whole Pub regarding the ratings of this game. Either you did this to annoy me or you guys don't know a masterpiece of a game when it's starring you in the face (this is mostly in jest... mostly).

Just rounded up this year's playthrough and it's such a blast. It wasn't a record run, but it was still a damn good run as I ended the game on 56 lives, making it my second best run so far. I missed out on a couple of lives and I lost some due to the final bosses making some weird unsynchronized moves which made me lose more lives than I'd like. a perfect game nevertheless.

Do you play through any of the sequels? Funny you should ask, because I just played through Rayman Revolution the other day. I played through it to completion once before, but it's a completely different game than the first one. I'm posting a thread about the second game in the weekly discussion. As for the third game, it seems to me that the majority of the Rayman community loves that game the most. It's a lot of fun, but again, totally different from the first game.

Balder, I thought I should let you know that my 5-year-old daughter just discovered that we owned Rayman Origins, and she absolutely loves it. She won't stop cracking up! She isn't half bad at playing it either.
