This is the best thing the name Ghost in the Shell is attached to. this 95 Anime is one of the best Animated movies of all time with amazing hand drawn animation, Great Action, Wonderful soundtrack (which I still listen to quite often) and has a all around great atmosphere.
Not a big fan of the franchise outside this movie. The Manga it's based off tries to be way too Philosophical and the Artwork is all over the place which makes it hard to follow and the TV series and the sequels try to be more like the Manga than this one movie.

The whole idea that AI can develop a soul is very controversial and nihilistic because if AI could some day develop a soul it could mean one of two things:
1. That our own souls don't have value 2. That our creations aren't really ours, but that we are just another way to facilitate creation to happen through us from a higher power when it meets certain level of polish or parameters
It also puts another level of moral dilemma we probably would prefer to ignore given the option to care, which is that the value we would give to our own creations may actually matter.
And considering that level of apathy will likely be the case, it puts concern in our minds that it is the same case for our own creators.
That's something not even atheists would like to hope for because I know even in denial people have some level of belief just for existing.
The one thing I do like is that it clearly shows what some could probably see as evolution is just a way to imprison ourselves into a lower level of reality, and that death is the only path to escape those limitations that nature offers only to those with actual souls, aka actual life forms that originate from the same source.
Which I'm pretty sure is one of the concepts that inspired movies like Inception, and The Matrix of course.
The one thing that always gets me is that somehow it is acceptable for people of higher realms to mate with people of lower realms, kind of like the Nephilim.
That one thing makes option 2 more likely, and one heck of a mind bending shit to even consider as a possibility.
However if that's true, it means it is also another possible path for offspring to continue without the need of simple multiplication of numbers, but to diversify our own existence for preservation sake.
If you would look at that from a higher dimension where time is visible ala Interstellar, our lifespan would probably look like a virus spreading through time which isn't pretty at all, and makes Agent Smith right.
So the whole movie is depressing, and the only thing redeemable from it is that it really shows that if all of this makes sense from a logical standpoint it means our "Kingdom of Heaven" is the moment we see attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion, and C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate.
Meaning future and past are truly irrelevant and that living each moment as it is is our own reward, which is something our ego definitely doesn't want to hear, at least within the limitations of our perceived reality.
Outside that reality no one knows, but the movie clearly borrows Blade Runner conclusions that make sense end up inspiring other artists too.

I watched this movie four years ago and it's fantastic. Some of my favorite science fiction worlds of all time are the worlds of Blade Runner and Deus Ex, and Ghost in the Shell is in the same realm as these two. The animation style is 2D awesomeness and it doesn't get much better than this. I don't remember exactly how I felt about the story at the time, but I do think it was slightly confusing, however, on a rewatch I'd like to think I'd love it even more. The puppet master was an excellent adversary and I just love the technology part of this film in contrast to some of our other members of the Pub. The sequel is also fantastic, and those two make up for my favorite rendition of the manga. I've watched some of the compilation movies of the Stand-alone complex and while they are good, they pale in comparison to these two. 5/5 a milestone in animation and world building.

Great review man, to me how smoothly the movie presents all these challenging concepts is what makes it special.
It really deals with very important questions of things we probably would want to look away and ignore, but that are so clearly expressed that is hard not to consider them.
It is mind bending in the sense that it is so easy to understand, it is so easy to follow, but so hard to accept, and so hard to deny at the same time.
I still haven't see the sequel because I didn't know it wasn't just a movie, but apparently there are sequels, manga, and a lot of other stuff.
The art style reminds me of 80's hentai, and it definitely has a lot of inspiration from those, but without the sex stuff, just the gore.
I have the 4K version and it looks and sounds good to me with the HDR, and the Atmos.
I heard some people saying that they prefer it on stereo, and I can understand that because it happened to me with a Knights Of The Zodiac movie, but the new mix is totally fine as long as you don't have nostalgic feelings about the original.
I don't know if they have restored the second one, but I'm looking forward to watch it.

This is the first movie and there's a sequel to it, then there's a show called The Stand Alone Complex, which is also compiled into three movies with a 4th movie sequel and then there's a short series called Arise. These three animated entities are not related to each other other than being based of the same manga. Then there's also the live-action movie.

I have the live action movie on 3D and 4K, and it is not as bad as people claim, it has some beautiful sets that look really good on 3D, it just doesn't have all the philosophical stuff that is the strength of the original movie. It just barely touches it by showing Scarlett Johansson disturbed by her own significance as a living being, and that's as far as it gets, but the movie is still a fun watch.
