I finished The Original Series along with the movies and the animated series, and while I thought I was going to start another series, I really wanted to get back into Star Trek again. This franchise works so well when you just want to be entertained for 45 minutes. It's a lost art to tell a compelling story contained within 45 minutes. Everything is serialized these days.
I've watched six episodes this far, and while I do know that the two first seasons aren't representative for what the series is as a whole, I do find it relative enjoyable. I still prefer TOS at this point, but I can tell that most of these characters are going to grow on me, but I have hard time believing I'll like them better than the big four of TOS, Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Scotty. The show looks a lot more modern and it's great, however, I do wish they used models instead of CGI for the ship and background effects. The theme is the same as from The Motion Picture, which is the best theme of all of Star Trek.
Of the six episodes I have seen so far, only Encounter at Far Point and Where No One has Gone Before were good, the rest were kind of bland or boring. The moment with Dr. McCoy in the first episode was incredible though. Like holy shit that was nostalgic and unexpected. I thought I had seen the last of him as I know he died shortly after the last TOS film, but apparently he got a short cameo in TNG as well. Brilliant.
Please share any moments related to TNG in this thread. I loved discussing TOS in its thread, so let's do the same here.

I've never watched Star trek but was always intrigued to find out what the big deal was. I always got the feeling that it's a show that I would enjoy very much if I actually gave it a chance. I just wouldn't know where to start. What would you recommend a non Treky?. Where do I start?.

It's one of the best episodes and perhaps the best introductory episode. All of it is up on Netflix and I think. That was actually pretty entertaining. But a lot more light hearted than I thought it would be. But the plot points were played out very well for a show from that time. You think Kirk screwed up with his mission just for him to see a minute week link in the situation where he realises the Tribles react different around Klingons revealing the real traitor and unravelling many other plot twists in a Sherlock Holmes fashion. I'm impressed. |

So reviews for V and VI are incoming? Are you watching them on dvd? I think they have the option of watching old special effects or new redone stuff. |

One of the interesting thing about Star Trek that I enjoy is the different timeline episodes. Starting with the first series with an evil Federation, each episode works well.

So reviews for V and VI are incoming? Are you watching them on dvd? I think they have the option of watching old special effects or new redone stuff. Yes, I watched them a couple of weeks ago on Blu-ray. V was mediocre at best and VI was great with an amazing ending. |

I think I'll go back and watch S1 E1 later today. Found out there's only 70 episodes all together. Thought there was a lot more. Well, they're full 45 minute episodes though so it takes a while to get through, but it's so much fun. Anyways, TNG have over 170 episodes though. So there's enough to watch. |

What do you think of the "Q"? Not just the character but the species? Q is another magical fairy type alien species. Even though they were never called Q in TOS, there were plenty of these characters there as well. I don't particular like this sort of characters as they are kind of outside of science fiction and more into fantasy. I can live with them though. |

Congrats on finishing all that. It must feel like an accomplishment. I always feel accomplished when I finish a series even if I'm just sitting on my couch the whole time, LOL! Same thing with books, and even magazines. Star Trek is one of the most important franchises, so it is even more meaningful.
About the concert of series, to me when everything is contained within the episode I call that "series", and when it keeps you guessing I call that "soap opera", so for me everything is no longer a series, just novel after novel.

I've been watching some more and I can see why people disregard this first season. It's full of mediocre episodes and for some reason Wesley always plays an important role and solves problems trivially. My main gripe with the series is that a lot of the side characters are kind of bland. In TOS every single major side character felt important to me; Spock, Bones, Scotty, Sulu, Chekhov and Uhera were all stellar. Dr. Crusher, Wesley, Tasha and even Riker are kind of meh most of the time.
Datalore was a great episode though. A total classic in terms of premise. We get to know where Data comes from and we get some classic doppelganger action. Love those kinds of episodes, and it was the best one yet.

I watched the first two episodes after your recommendation and loved it. I always thought Star Trek to be a sitcom that took place in space but I was very wrong. Star Trek is more in lines with Sherlock Holmes, An Inspector calls and mostly The Twilight zone. As a huge fan of the Twilight Zone I immensely enjoyed what I've seen of Star Trek. It's on my list of things to get back to. I have a question which you may be able to answer, Balder. There a change in character from the first episode to the next. The captain in the first episode claimed he was going to retire but was switched with William Shatner without an explanation. Do you know why this is?. |
