I've been watching some more and I can see why people disregard this first season. It's full of mediocre episodes and for some reason Wesley always plays an important role and solves problems trivially. My main gripe with the series is that a lot of the side characters are kind of bland. In TOS every single major side character felt important to me; Spock, Bones, Scotty, Sulu, Chekhov and Uhera were all stellar. Dr. Crusher, Wesley, Tasha and even Riker are kind of meh most of the time. Datalore was a great episode though. A total classic in terms of premise. We get to know where Data comes from and we get some classic doppelganger action. Love those kinds of episodes, and it was the best one yet. I watched the first two episodes after your recommendation and loved it. I always thought Star Trek to be a sitcom that took place in space but I was very wrong. Star Trek is more in lines with Sherlock Holmes, An Inspector calls and mostly The Twilight zone. As a huge fan of the Twilight Zone I immensely enjoyed what I've seen of Star Trek. It's on my list of things to get back to. I have a question which you may be able to answer, Balder. There a change in character from the first episode to the next. The captain in the first episode claimed he was going to retire but was switched with William Shatner without an explanation. Do you know why this is?. Ah yes, you watched the pilot first, The Cage. This episode isn't canon and is later edited into the double episode The Menagerie. Captain Pike, is re-introduced for that episode and he isn't captain Kirk. The rest of the episodes are canon though, starting with The Man Trap as the real first episode. I'm very happy to hear you're enjoying it. It's one of my favorite series, ans if you want to hear my thoughts on some of the episodes as you go through them, I've posted a lot of discussion in the Star Trek: The Original Series thread.

Oh okay now it makes sense to why the pilot was titled episode 0. And I will certainly ask for your opinions while I go through the episodes. (SPOILERS) I thought it was heart braking in the pilot episode to find out that the girl the captain was caged with was just a hologram and her true form was hideous because the aliens didn't know what a human anatomy looked like when putting her mangled body back together. So she decided to stay behind and and live a beautiful imaginary life than face the ugliness that was her reality. And the captains words were that she made the right choice by staying behind. I mean that's some powerful stuff right there that challenges some of the most meaningful heart felt moments in movies ever. And this was in the 60's. Just wow. And the second episode of the salt alien may be the first time ever that a alien/killer was on board a ship killing people off one by one ever on screen?. So Ridley Scott's Alien wasn't so original after all.

So Ridley Scott's Alien wasn't so original after all. That is what surprised me the most about Star Trek. It was literally light years ahead of its time. It had so many creative ideas and variety, making it hard to keep track off just how much of a game changer it was. Gallileo Seven is an amazing episode and one of my favorites. For some reason people don't often talk about it. It's in season 1 too.

I've been watching some more TNG lately and it's been a while since I've watched any episodes, but after having watched a bunch more, most of the episodes are very mediocre in the first season. I can definitely see why people are a bit iffy on the first season. The supporting characters are just exposition vessels for the most part, which is far from what they were in TOS. There was one episode I felt like was solid enough to mention though, and that was Coming of Age. For once Wesley Crusher wasn't a bore to watch. His experience with Starfleet Academy and their tests were quite fun to watch. That combined with a Starfleet commander trying to see if there is anything impeccable with Jean-Luc Picard made for a great time.

The remainder he’s a regular on the show, they moved away from the Wesley saves the ship trope and he was much better for it. He also ditched those ridiculous sweaters. Too bad people’s perception of him is colored by his lousy first season.
