It's romance, but it's a good one. The story is very creative, especially how they did the entire "memories being wiped" concept; it doesn't disappoint visually, too. It also reminds me of an anime movie called Memories.
Was this the last truly good Jim Carrey movie? I don't remember if Man on the Moon was before or after this one.

I picked this movie this week, because I absolutely love the philosophical matters discussed within the context of matters of both science and of the heart. Would you erase a portion of your memory if you hated it so much? All of our history is dictated by the millions of decisions we make in our lives. If we delete a heartbreaking incident, would that change who you are, or is it somehow connected to your being permanently? Are your brain cells similar to a hard drive, in which you can never truly erase data? Are you destined to fall in love with someone? Will your subconscious force your brain to do a sort of "data recovery" to bring you back to where you should be? Is predestination real, do we make our own decisions, or is it a combination of both? Is it ethical to erase memories in order to help a person live a quality life when they asked for the procedure?
There aren't many movies that touch so many deeply important questions in such a well done manner. I know others exist, but this film touched a cord for me. I have always said that 500 years from now, no one will care about the majority of the decisions I make today. Jim Carrey said something similar with, "500 feet off the ground, it all seems insignificant." Yet to us, the chaos that surrounds us, or an all encompassing God/being, it truly does matter. However, who is really making the decisions, and to what extend do our actions matter?
I think it goes without saying that I truly enjoyed this film.

This is one of the best romantic movies of all time. Incredibly original and well made. Definitely Jim Carrey's best performance. I remember watching parts of it on cable TV way back. I got into it in the middle of the story and I just didn't get it then. I didn't finish the film and dismissed it for being a weird and unenjoyable Jim Carrey movie. Years later I hear about this awesome Jim Carrey movie about dreams and memories. I had some suspicions that it was this movie. I sat down and watched it from the beginning and I was blown away. An amazing movie in every regard. It's writer Charlie Kaufman's best work. One of the few writers in the film industry that truly exceeds the director of his films.

I have seen this movie a couple times and I always end up loving it, however like Total Recall I keep forgetting the details, so every time I put it again, it feels like I'm watching it for the first time. I only remember the general vibe and how good it was. It's weird when movies are like that. It also reminds me of Rhode Island for some reason. It definitely has New England vibes.
