Technically, the Yellow version is the most updated, with rebalancing, some color enhancements if played on GBC, recurring Jesse & James fights and Pikachu following the player around and having different moods...
And yet, Red has a fucking awesome dragon on the cover, so it wins by default. Charizard is the best.

Honestly the best starter for gen 1 was Bulbasaur as it was good against 2 of the gyms right at the start. I have used so many different Pokémon that were better then Charizard and may have also been actually part dragon types. A powerful rock type attack, water type attack, or electric move is enough to deal with Charizard and it really poses no threat at all.

Pokemon yellow was dope, but every one played Red. Level Charizard up right and he's unteachable.

But in yellow you could get all three starters plus Pikachu. There's literally no reason to play red or blue then.

Oh boy, gen 1 pokemon. Where to even begin? There's so much weirdness to talk about with gen 1. Even though the GB games weren't the first pokemon game I played (that distinction goes to Stadium on N64, which I got in christmas of '99), nor were they my first handheld pkm games, as I got pkm Silver in 2000, I did eventually get around to playing the gen 1 GB classics many years after they were released. I think it was 2003 when I finally played one of them (Red version I believe) for the first time, which I borrowed from a friend. I played through half of it, never finishing it. But you know what? Despite its dated feel and goofy sprites, and despite having played Silver & Ruby beforehand, I still loved every second of it. HOWEVER, looking back, there are several...idiosyncrasies of gen 1 that stand out and make gen 1 a memorable starting point for longtime pkm players like myself, as well as a morbid curiosity for many younger fans who weren't around when these games hit shelves. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, I'll just sum up the most well-known quirks & oddities that define Gen 1 and which make it feel so special for me and other OG pkm fans: -fat pikachu. Fat pikachu is cool. No matter how much cuter modern pikachu is, fat pikachu came first, so that's how I'll always remember him. -fat everything (ALL the 'mons looked fatter in gen 1!) -the screwy sprite work (see here: I intensely despise TheJWittz, but I decided to just use his video here anyway, since it was the best compilation I could find. -type mechanics being almost completely different and were heavily changed in subsequent entries, making gen 1 feel extremely weird/nuanced compared to all other gens. For example, fire was weak to ice, ghost didn't hit psychic super effectively, and so on. -Many moves like wrap, fire spin, hyper beam and blizzard functioning radically differently compared to gen 2, which changed most of the moves to varying degrees to how we know them today. -Tons of insane glitches and hilarious jank; gen 1 was BY FAR the glitchiest pokemon generation, specifically the GB games. Don't believe me? Here's proof: bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_glitches_(Generation_I)-Ken Sugimori's artistic influence. Ken, the original lead art director for the series, was much more heavily involved in the earlier gens' designs, giving gen 1 the most refined and creator driven feeling pokemon designs of arguably any pkm generation, in my opinion. Every true pkm fan can agree that Ken is the freaking man. -The jynx controversy. Was Jynx originally a black woman??? Jynx has gone on to become one of gaming's biggest controversies and is still talked about today. Personally I've always much preferred the original design. I always saw her face as being cast in shadow rather than "negro-like" as some claim, which made the OG design seem way spookier & more effective IMO. The purple face re-design looks stupid and no where near as mysterious & intimidating. I could go on and on. Gen 1 really was that insane in every regard. But it is for these reasons that I remember gen 1 so fondly. I mean, simultaneously being the black sheep, the ugly duckling, AND the grand-daddy of the franchise is quite the distinction, so I have to give it mad props for that. And besides, you can't always get things right on the first try, right? We should all cut gen 1 some slack. As for the poll, I'm not voting because Red & Blue are too similar to distinguish between each other, and I never got around to playing Yellow version, which seems to be the superior game of the four from what I've heard. ALSO, important note: if anyone is curious about playing the JP exclusive Green version just remember that the Nintendo handhelds don't feature region locking. Although, considering how similar it seems to be to Blue and Red, I think only die-hard longtime pkm fans would want to bother.

I don't think I can recall ever using a jinx in a playthrough of any Pokémon game. I just thought it was too creepy to use. I want to get into collecting 1st and 2nd gen Pokémon toys from the 90's and early 2000's as I still have a huge amount of nostalgia for the 1st gen mainly.

Dude, if you play to win, you should TOTALLY use Jynx. All psychic type pokemon are OP as fuck in in gen 1 because they have no weaknesses. The psychic type didn't get weaknesses until gen 2 with the introduction of dark types as well as the buffing of ghost and bug types. Even among gen 1 psychics, Jynx is a very useful pokemon, since it has access to ice type attacks as well as lovely kiss. And additionally, ice type itself was at its peak in gen 1, so you really can't go wrong with jynx. Even the likes of dragonite, zapdos and moltres would fall before jynx likes sacks of useless shit. A great source of information on gen 1 mechanics is False Swipe Gaming: Awesome channel! I was surprised to learn that the earlier pokemon games had strong competitive scenes, considering how simplistic and straight forward the battle mechanics are compared to the later games.

Well I'll be damned, there are two other noteworthy gen 1 quirks that I can't believe I forgot to mention! They are as follows: -One combined special stat. Before gen 2, all pokemon only had one combined statistic for special attack and special defense. This meant that certain pokemon like tauros and articuno were much stronger in gen 1 while others like hitmonchan and hitmonlee were way weaker. This adds further nuance to gen 1 and distances it from the sequel gens' battle mechanics. -MISSINGNO! How the FUCK did I forget to mention Missingno??? ...AKA the single creepiest pokemon in existenceHe/she/it was unarguably the most famous gen 1 glitch and arguably the single most famous gaming urban legend of the 90s! When I was a kid, I had a pokefan friend who often gossiped about the glitch with me. I was very skeptical of their claim at the time, but later I learned that what they were saying was, in fact, true after I hit up google one night and learned that missingno was a REAL ghost type pokemon that haunted every RBY cartridge! Out of fear I never attempted to summon missingno myself.

This is where everything started for the IP. I remember my cousin had Pokémon Yellow, and my brother as well when he started collecting them. These games were huge just like Tamagotchis were.
