For me it was without a doubt the N64, I always felt like a total badass playing all those games:
- 007 James Bond GoldenEye - F-Zero X - Star Wars Rogue Squadron - Super Mario 64 - Ocarina Of Time - International Superstar Soccer 64 - 1080° Snowboarding - Wave Race 64 - Killer Instinct Gold - Mortal Kombat Trilogy - Mortal Kombat 4 - Mortal Kombat Mythologies - Majora's Mask - Jet Force Gemini - Rainbow Six - Perfect Dark - Resident Evil 2 - Duke Nukem 64 - Doom 64 - Quake II - Turok - Turok 2
I personally consider I was already excellent at playing SNES games like:
- Super Mario World - Mega Man X - Mega Man X2 - Mega Man X3 - Killer Instinct - Mortal Kombat II - Mortal Kombat 3 - Super Castlevania IV - Gradius III - F-Zero - Contra III The Alien Wars - Battletoads Double Dragon - Imperium
However the N64 really made me feel like I was some sort of professional. I don't think I ever felt that good at playing games in other generations after that.
I guess it was because I was growing up and because of school I didn't dedicate that much time to gaming after that. In fact, I stopped completely for a while after the PS2 and GameCube.
I have to say in the following generation I was OK at some games like:
- Street Fighter III 3rd Strike - Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 - Capcom Vs. SNK 2 - Gradius V - Contra Shattered Soldier - Neo Contra - Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec - Gran Turismo 4 - F-Zero GX
And I also beat completely games like:
- Silent Hill 3 - Silent Hill 4 - 007 James Bond Agent Under Fire - 007 James Bond Nightfire - 007 James Bond Everything Or Nothing - Star Wars Rogue Squadron II Rogue Leader - Star Wars Rogue Squadron III Rebel Strike - Resident Evil Remake - Resident Evil Zero - Castlevania Lament Of Innocence - Castlevania Curse Of Darkness - Shadow Of The Colossus
But I do admit I never felt so high level of a player as I felt with the N64 titles.
Even right now, I consider myself pretty decent at Mortal Kombat XL, Tekken 6, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Tekken 7, Mortal Kombat 11, but those are isolated instances, as opposed of feeling like I'm dominating all the games in a single console.

Maybe the Master System. Going back to those games in the recent years I wonder how I actually beat them as a kid because some of those games I find to be incredibly hard or require a lot of patience such as Sonic 2, Spiderman and The Ninja.

You had a Master System? That's awesome. I only knew of the Master System and the Sega Genesis because of magazines. I never knew anyone with those consoles in real life. I only had the privilege to play those games until they came out through collections for the PS2.

For me, it has less to do with the console/gen and more to do with the genre.
I will say, though, that the D-pads of some console makers like Sony and Microsoft are absolutely awful and no MLG could ever produce great results with those things, which is why I always opt for 3rd party pads by venerable hardware providers like Ascii and Hori with those systems for playing the more demanding genres.

For me it was the xbox one. I started out very casual, but through the life span of the console I felt very competent towards the end when playing shooters like halo and apex.

All those great games i never got to own as a child such as Ninja Gaiden and Mario 3. I would of been a happier person today otherwise.

I would of been a happier person today otherwise. The Master System is still one of the best systems I have seen, but I agree 100% that it falls short by comparison with the almighty NES. It seems to have been a very challenging generation either way. My cousin that is older than me played that generation and I am always amazed of how easy those games are for him. For me, it has less to do with the console/gen and more to do with the genre. Those are good alternatives for sure. For me it was the xbox one. Xbox One is a big generation, it must have been feel good to kick ass in all those games.

The 360 for sure. Back then I played with really competitive people I got to know over XBL. I was for the most part playing ranked playlists in Reach and winning most of them. It was super fun, but I can tell that period is over as I mostly stick to social playlists nowadays to avoid the toxic environment of ranked play, although I sometimes play it.

That was a very competitive scene I heard. I feel that it would have been nice to have some record of it, like people that streams nowadays get to keep their lives for future references. Our memories aren't very good sometimes, so it would be nice to see yourself playing at those levels again.

I'm going to go with the Super Nintendo on this one. I FELT that way back then. I realize that the catalogue is far bigger than what I knew back then, so I was quite naïve. I felt that way with the Nintendo 64 for a while, but life got me out of the gaming world after that.

I guess that's part of what unites us as a community.

While I suck at most Genesis and SNES action/platformer/shooter games, and even my beloved Saturn gives me a hard time with its shmups and fighters, I feel that I'm generally quite good at NES (never had trouble with Mega Man, Zelda II or the Ninja Gaidens, except NG3, and those are known as difficult games) and X360 action games (Bayonetta, NG2, Vanquish etc.). I'm definitely not good enough like a speedrunner or a competitive player, but I can manage myself well on those two consoles. Edit: I've recently took the courage to finally try and beat Ninja Gaiden on Master Ninja (PC version). stratogustav, I really felt like a total badass as the credits rolled!
