The Famicom era Super Mario art is amazing.

I could've sworn we've already reviewed Super Mario Land 1. Oh, here it is!I'll repeat what I said before: This game (SML1) is like a modded Super Mario 1. The fireball gets replaced with this Surface-to-Air ball bearing that collects coins, and the levels all have themes, rather than the Mushroom Kingdom all the time. There's walking easter Island heads, rocks you can ride and Chinese hopping zombies. I liked that. And when you watch the credits, there was only like 8 people who made the game. Compare that to any title today... Now, SML2 is closer to the traditional Mario formula here. Enemy sprites are clarified, the ball bearing has been replaced by fireballs, but you still have a diverse range of enemies. And there is even a hidden level in each zone. And this was the first appearance of Wario. I think it was made by a different developer(?), so it came off as a bit easy. As an adult, you could probably beat it in a day, if you wanted to.

6 Golden coins all the way. Mario Land 1 was good for its time but Golden Coins was a game that had the quality of the console counterparts. 6 Golden Coins was to Mario World as Links Awakening was to Link to the Past.

It was designed by Gunpei Yokoi, rather than Miyamoto so that's why it looks so drastically different. Yokoi designed the Game Boy so he also had the task of creating a Mario launch game for it. When they learned to overcome the limitations of the Gameboy they returned to the familiar Miyamoto formula for SML2. (although Yokoi did have a hand in the original Mario bros from the beginning, as he oversaw Miyamoto, who was just starting out in the industry)

Both fantastic games, but one thing I admire about the Golden Coins is that it actually gave a satisfactory ending to the Super Mario saga early on for the original fans to see.
The series could continue having releases throughout the years, but at least Golden Coins provided the end result in case someone would want to place a timeline for the series that the first fans were able to see.
Mario had already a castle at this point and end up with Daisy as opposed of princess Toadstool, which explains why the Galaxy games hints of Rosalina being the daughter of Luigi and Peach in the future was more feasible. It clears a lot of questions about the saga, and gives it an interesting twist considering the brothers end up swapping partners along the way.
It also opens up a continuation for the sage through Wario while being a beautiful love letter to the fans of the amazing experience the saga of Super Mario was, still delivered from the original developers and creators to the original fans.
However both games are mainline in my opinion, and an important part of the overall Super Mario saga.

I like the music in the first game more and appreciated it adding in some variety with the shmup sections but SML2 is still overall the better game with better graphics, controls, enemy variety, and more levels.
