My son has been playing 7800/2600 games, and he hates the joystick. He loves using the Genesis controller d-pad, but that doesn't work for 7800 games that require buttons. I know there is a gamepad in Europe, but I find it silly to import a gamepad from Europe for $50. (I would love to try one of those, though.) I have heard of converters that you can use on NES controllers (which are far easier to come by around here), but I haven't seen or used them. Does anyone have a suggestion for me here? Has anyone used one of these converters? Is there a way to get the European gamepad cheaper?

So you never play with the 2600 joystick? I like playing the original system with an original controller. As for a EU 7800 controller perhaps you should check out AtariAge's Marketplace.

I am just fine with the joystick, because I grew up with it. My son, however, cannot figure the joystick out for the life of him. He changes the orientation constantly, and when I tell him to go "up," he his arm rises, but he does not push forward. For some reason, the d-pad is much easier for him. I suppose Nintendo really knew what it was doing when it produced the NES controller.

Ooooh! Thanks! I've heard of that website before, but it is REALLY hard to navigate through.

The 2600 joystick is much easier to use if you have big hands though.

That website does look like it is stuck in the early 90s! I guess if it isn't broke, then don't fix it. I emailed their place, and they have the CX78s in stock. I'll call and order one soon. I'll have to let you guys know what it is like, although, you had them readily available to you in Europe, right Balder? I'm really jealous of that. I do like the 2600 joystick a lot, but kids just don't seem to like it. scipioafricanus brought over the CX23 Kids controller. My son seems to like that monstrosity, but it isn't great for fast moving games. It is great for the Sesame Street games though.

I was thinking about making a new 7800 controller, because the original is such a pain to even use. The wonky second button is idiotic in its engineering. I need more boards and acid either way. Running low on solder and ceramic caps as well. Anyway, when I have time, initiative, and the schematics to save having to retranslate the hardware itself, maybe.

dschult3 yeah they're available in Europe, but I still don't own a 7800 unfortunately. Instead of buying 4 2600s and 2 Lynxes perhaps I should have gotten a 5200 or 7800?

Sounds like you might enjoy this project from Atariage. atariage.com/2600/archives/nes_atari.html?SystemID=2600

That's a negative Ghost Rider. I will not butcher an NES pad for any reason, hence my mention of needing boards and acid (to etch said boards). Making a 5200 gamepad would be a bit of a nightmare, so I was thinking more along the lines of Atari ST/C64 controllers, instead.

Just buy an NES clone controller and mod that.

Forget modding, I have the knowledge to scratch build, so I may as well put it to use.
