It is basically what Jeff Bezos dreams to do at some point.
Honestly this film is just an "In Time" wanna be, but simply not as clever.
That said, I did appreciate the intention of putting a similar concept out.
However I never look at it like they probably intended, which is probably to create a clash between classes.
The way I like to interpret these type of stories is more allegoric in the same sense of this documentary by Robert Sapolsky:
Just like "In Time", where belonging to a higher class gives you more time to live, this sense of self worth is important to achieve for everyone for survival reasons alone, you can literally develop severe health problems for not having this sense of self value under control.
Ideally, regardless of what society dictates as high class or low class, everyone should feel with the same value as everyone else.
Because of the way society conditions people to feel different or less according to society's own made up parameters, this can feel difficult to accomplish for the average person.
But once you know how full of shit those imposed society parameters of self worth are, you can easily realize it is all make believe, and there is nothing you are lacking in terms of value or self worth in relation to others.
This is an important realization that can add quality years to your life and give you the confidence to accomplish bigger goals as well.
Which is the reason why I give this movie a pass, as something that can be interesting to think about under the right frame of mind, even if that was not what the creators likely wanted to communicate.

I watched it four years ago, and I wrote this review for it then:
"I knew I was going to hate it because I hate Chappie and District 9, but since I am not a quitter I just had to get this movie out of my way. It sucks. Why? Because it is basically the same movie as the two before mentioned movies, which also sucked. It is all just CGI, some special guy that needs to change the world, bad social commentary that ends up being preachy and always robots. Does Bloomkamp know how to make any other movie besides this one (meaning all these three movies). I would rather want him to make sequels instead of making different universes that all feel the same anyway."

Funny I actually did hate Chappie and District 9. I never understood what people liked about those movies. But I won't lie, I did enjoy Elysium for the reasons mentioned before. But if it wasn't for that particular interpretation aside from the obvious social commentary, I'm pretty sure I would have hated it too for everything else.
