Since Adventure Kid I actually enjoy Japanese Animation war films, specially those based on WWII. This looks like something I would enjoy.

This is one of the few movies that's made me cry, along with Pink Floyd's The Wall and The Green Mile. Japan was quite a different place then. You're reminded of what the Emperor's aspirations were costing his people, when you see the bombs raining down on the houses ("Long live the Emperor!"). People have become hostile or, at best, desensitised and apathetic.
Seita does his best to keep his little sister Setsuko innocent and fed. But the movie builds her up to make her death more tragic.("Making a grave. Momma's in a grave too. Auntie told me."). In the end, it's all for naught.
You know, a lot of this would be happening in Eastern Europe right now.

Japanese people were notoriously brutal with the Chinese, probably the most savages the world has ever seen, or at least top 10. They really had a lot bad things coming in terms of karma for the things they did to the Chinese. Surprisingly they managed to rebuild their society again, and it is probably one of the most successful rebirths in history, even more than Germany. To Germany it took an entire Cold War to pretty much end to start a new era, but the Japanese had a quicker wake up call.
