This movie was a big learning experience for the franchise, much like Beast Machines, over ten years later. This raised the audiences' ire but not only killing Optimus Prime, but also clearing out the old cast to make way for a new roster of characters/toys.
Your basic plot is that, in the distant year of 2005, the Decepticons have Cybertron, and are chasing the Autobots off Earth while being overshadowed by Unicron the World Eater. And only the MacMuffin known as the Autobot Matrix of Leadership can destroy it.
On the bright side, it introduced some memorable moments and lines, which will go on to be repeated in other continuities.
