The first thing to know about the Sega Dreamcast is that it is basically a Sega Naomi at home. You simply cannot go wrong with a proper arcade board in your house. In my opinion, it has one of the best home console libraries ever made. - 18 Wheeler - Border Down - Cannon Spike - Capcom Vs. SNK - Capcom Vs. SNK 2 - Castle Shikigami 2 - Chaos Field - Chu Chu Rocket! - Cool Cool Toon - Cosmic Smash - Confidential Mission - Crazy Taxi - Crazy Taxi 2 - Cyber Troopers Virtual-On - Dance Dance Revolution 2nd Mix - Daytona USA 2001 - Dead Or Alive 2 - Death Crimson OX - F355 Challenge - Fighting Vipers 2 - Garou Mark of The Wolves - Giga Wing - Giga Wing 2 - Guilty Gear X - Gunbird 2 - Heavy Metal Geomatrix - The House Of The Dead 2 - Hydro Thunder - Ikaruga - Jet Set Radio - Jojo's Bizarre Adventure - Karous - The King Of Fighters Dream Match - The King Of Fighters Evolution - The King Of Fighters 2000 - The King Of Fighters 2001 - The King Of Fighters 2002 - The Last Blade 2 - Mars Matrix - Marvel Vs. Capcom - Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 - Mortal Kombat Gold - Outtrigger - Plasma Sword - Power Drift - Power Stone - Power Stone 2 - Psychic Force 2012 - Psyvariar 2 - Puyo Puyo Fever - Radirgy - Samba De Amigo - San Francisco Rush 2049 - Sega Bass Fishing - Sega Bass Fishing 2 - Sega Marine Fishing - Sega Rally 2 - Silent Scope - SoulCalibur - Space Channel 5 - Space Channel 5 Part 2 - Sports Jam - Star Wars Episode I Racer - Street Fighter III New Generation - Street Fighter III 2nd Impact - Street Fighter III 3rd Strike - Street Fighter Alpha 3 - Super Street Fighter II X For Matching Service - Tech Romancer - Triggerheart Exelica - Trizeal - The Typing Of The Dead - Under Defeat - Vampire Chronicle For Matching Service - Virtua Cop 2 - Virtua Fighter 3tb - Virtua Striker 2 - Virtua Tennis - Virtua Tennis 2 - Zero Gunner 2 The value of this console is priceless. It's a whole arcade center in a single unit. It pretty much broke the record with all the excellent games released in the very small life spam the console had. - Bang Bang Busters - Bangai-O - Breakers - Captain Tomaday - Dino Crisis - Dynamite Cop - Ganryu - Gaunlet Legends - Ghost Blade - Gunlord - Incoming - Last Hope - Monaco Grand Prix - NBA Showtime - Neo XYX - NFL Blitz 2000 - NFL Blitz 2001 - Phantasy Star Online - Quake III Arena - Razion - Resident Evil 2 - Resident Evil 3 Nemesis - Resident Evil Code Veronica - Rez - Sega GT - Segagaga - Shenmue - Shenmue II - Skies Of Arcadia - Sonic Adventure - Sonic Adventure 2 - Sonic Shuffle - Spawn in The Demon's Hand - Test Drive Le Mans - Tokyo Xtreme Racer - Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2 - Twinkle Star Sprites - Unreal Tournament - WWF Royal Rumble - Zombie Revenge You basically couldn't take a break; it was one gem after the other in a very little amount of time. I still remember seeing the commercials in Cartoon Network's Toonami in between Dragon Ball Z episodes. It also marked the last era of the arcades in the West, with arcade super hits like The House Of The Dead 2, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, Capcom Vs. SNK 2, Street Fighter III 3rd Strike, SoulCalibur, Virtua Fighter 3tb, Virtua Cop 2, Silent Scope, and Dance Dance Revolution 2nd Mix. When the Dreamcast went down, the arcades also went down, as a symbol of the end of an era that comes all the way from the 80s. Devs were literally at their peak of arcade game design after decades of arcade design refinement. It was all consoles after that, the massive sales success of the PS2 console was a testimony of a new age in gaming, so arcades and the Dreamcast were no more, but it will always live in the heart of the purist player enthusiasts of the time.

Ehh, I prefer the Saturn and the Genesis over the Dreamcast.
The Dreamcast was a fine console that did have several better-than-perfect arcade ports, but the controller felt like a baby's toy compared to any of the Saturn controllers, and Sega's first party output for the Dreamcast was noticeably more casual than those on the Saturn or the Genesis. Games like Space Channel 9, Chu Chu Rocket, Shenmue, and Crazy Taxi just didn't appeal to me as a hardcore gamer. Shenmue in particular, despite its technical ambition, felt like a boring walking simulator or a tech demo rather than a real game with its own identity when it came to its gameplay.
Third party software was hit or miss, too. On one hand, you had one of the finest collections of fighting games to ever grace a home console, with Capcom's arcade ports and Soul Calibur being stand-outs, not to mention Virtua Fighter 3. But if you didn't have a third party controller or arcade stick it meant that you were stuck using that goofy, gimped Dreamcast controller. And on the other hand, you had a lot of cheesy, outdated jank like Draconis: Cult of the Wyrm, Blue Stinger, Fighting Force 2, and many others.
Ultimately, as a die-hard fan of Sonic Team's 16-bit work and as someone who grew up with Sonic 1-3 (via Sonic Mega Collection), the Dreamcast failed to live up to my expectations that had been set by Sega fanboys like Mark Bussler. I would argue that Astal on the Sega Saturn is more faithful to the spirit of Sonic 1-3 than Sonic Adventure 1 or 2 were. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED Sonic Adventure 2, and Sonic Adventure 1 had its moments, but they definitely felt like a modernization of the Sonic formula rather than something that was truly a faithful 3D adaption of classic 16-bit Sonic games. Even Nights Into Dreams, despite its flaws, was a more engaging game to play than Shenmue was.

I have had a dreamcast since 2013 when I bought mine used from a local retro game store. It still works its just a bit finicky when it comes to reading games but its been like that since I bought it. I used to have a lot more games but I sold them all except for a few. Rippin riders, airforce delta, test drive v rally, toy commander, and just recently acquired tokyo extreme racer 1. If you're going to play the dreamcast nowadays don't use that stupid controller the system came with as that controller is terrible. Spend the money and get this. www.amazon.com/Retro-Fighters-StrikerDC-Dreamcast-Controller-Sega/dp/B0891L7RYY?th=1
It makes the dreamcast so much better and I can actually play racing games now because the analog stick has a pad over it and now its much easier to control the car. I can't believe the difference this controller makes. Still looking for that elusive dreamcast mouse. I got the keyboard though but still no mouse. That freaking mouse is expensive though.

Somebody on Deviantart made this: Sega vs Capcom was one of the biggest missed opportunities that Sega made during the Dreamcast era. This would've been a killer-app right here. Having more exclusives like this by the best arcade devs of the time (like Capcom) would've helped the console's lifespan a lot. Instead, we got overhyped 3D stuff like Sonic Adventure and Shenmue which barely anybody cares about anymore. I mean, I like Sonic Adventure, but these later Sonic Team games didn't have the depth, staying power or (obviously) the tournament appeal of the classic Capcom Vs games. I'm sure Capcom would've been absolutely THRILLED to be offered the chance to make Sega Vs Capcom. I mean, it's a more relevant match-up than Marvel Vs Capcom, so why wouldn't they have felt up to it? Capcom could potentially still make a Sega Vs Capcom, but it wouldn't be the same nowadays, considering Capcom's creative decline and Sega's exit from the console market, as well as Sega's movement away from game developing in general. The window of opportunity for this idea to happen definitely isn't what it once was. I personally think Capcom should've either held off on making Marvel Vs Capcom 2 (yes, a heinous idea, I know) or just have outright cancelled their underwhelming games from that time like Strider 2 so they could have focused on making Sega Vs Capcom instead before the Dreamcast officially lost out to the PS2. Oh well. At least Sega managed to make Soul Calibur a Dreamcast exclusive. Boy what an amazing fighter that was. I wish the Dreamcast had more exclusive fighters like that and Sega Vs Capcom instead of perverted otaku shit like Dead or Alive and the obligatory Virtua Fighter sequels. Definitely would've given the Dreamcast the fighting game edge over the PS2 & GC as well as the Saturn, which even had a MUCH better controller for this genre than the Dreamcast.

I would had loved Sega Vs. Capcom as well. That's a very cool idea, specially with the properties they had then. Not everything needs to be a huge roaster. Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom was an example of that.
I would also had liked a Capcom X Sega Z Konami X Taito Beat 'em Up All-Stars. Cross overs are difficult to achieve because copyright issues. But for the most part they are usually worth it if done with care.

Capcom was an example of that. I would also had liked a Capcom X Sega Z Konami X Taito Beat 'em Up All-Stars. Cross overs are difficult to achieve because copyright issues. But for the most part they are usually worth it if done with care. I made a list of ideas for Capcom Vs games. Off the top of my head they include: Sega Vs Capcom (Final Fight vs SoR, Virtua Fighters vs Street Fighters, Virtua Fighters vs Rival Schools, House of the Dead & Virtua Cop vs Resident Evil, etc.) Dragon Ball Vs Capcom (Dimps worked on many Dragon Ball fighters/beat-em-ups back in the day so it would only make sense. Maybe Akira Toriyama himself or one of his lead artists at Toei could get involved and draw Dragon Ball/Toei versions of the Street Fighter roaster or preferably the other Capcom IPs, too) Namco Vs Capcom (again, Capcom already made Street Fighter x Tekken so it seems like they wanted to go this route, which would have been AWESOME. Throw some Soul Calibur fighters in the mix! Ibuki vs Taki, for example. The roaster practically just writes itself. Also, Time Crisis vs Resident Evil characters, maybe?) Konami vs Capcom (Metal Gear cast vs Resident Evil cast, Bomberman vs Mega man, Yie Ar Kung Fu vs Street Fighter, Ninja Turtles, etc.) From Software vs Capcom (as suggested by Cervantes, an interesting idea though the realistic visual design of their modern games doesn't lend itself to Capcom's style very well. I think Capcom's expressionistic, cartoony anime look of series like Mega Man and even Street Fighter would clash with the darker, realstic look of FromSoftware's games. I loved the art direction of their really early games like Ever Grace but those games sold like garbage and nobody played them, which might explain why FromSoftware chose to go a more westernized, realistic route with their visual designs in their later games. I have no idea what the roaster would be like partially since I've never actually played any of their games but also because I can't think of any Capcom equivalents to FromSoftware protagonists. I think Cervantes would have to explain himself here) Platinum Games vs Capcom, including all the Clover Studios IPs (since Platinum Games was founded by several former high-profile Capcom employees, I figure it would be a very fun project for both companies. The only problem is that a lot of Platinum Games' games like MadWorld were casualized flops that nobody asked for, nobody liked, and nobody played, so given their erratic output I'm not sure what Platinum games characters would or could actually make the roaster) Square Enix vs Capcom (Final Fantasy characters could alone form the majority of Square's side of the roaster. I imagine the fighting looking very super-hero esq considering all the magic and summons, similar in style and speed to Marvel Vs Capcom 2, unlike some other Capcom vs games like Capcom vs SNK and Street Fighter x Tekken which both had an appropriately slower pacing and grounded feeling of gameplay to match the more realistic nature and speed of the fighting in Tekken and SNK fighters) I think their might have been one or two other ideas for a Capcom vs game that I wrote down but forgot to mention here. I'm gonna have to consult my notepad and get back to you. Actually, I was already planning on making a thread about this, so I might just do that instead.

(Shonen) Jump Vs. Capcom doesn't seem so bad of an idea.

(Shonen) Jump Vs. Capcom doesn't seem so bad of an idea. Keep in mind that some of the manga featured in Shonen Jump like Yu-Gi-Oh is actually owned by video game companies like Konami. So, if Capcom made Konami Vs Capcom, we could have Yugi and Kaiba as playable fighters by default. Therefore Shonen Jump vs Capcom might not even be necessary. Shonen Jump vs Capcom might be difficult for Capcom to make since there's a ton of stuff featured that's all owned by different companies based on what I remember (I only ever bought & read one issue), so I'm not sure how getting the licenses would work. I'm not saying it can't be done, but it might be more trouble for Capcom than it's worth. I think my only other idea for a Capcom Vs game that I forget to mention here was Ark System Works vs Capcom. That was one that I originally conceived in my journal, as I mentioned. I read somewhere that capcom was planning on making Sammy Vs Capcom at one point, who originally owned the Guilty Gear series, but the deal fell through after Sammy merged with Sega. I can't remember where I read that, but I don't doubt it for a second since the founders of Ark System Works, which was owned by Sammy at that time, have admitted to being strongly influenced by late 90s Capcom games, like Street Fighter 3, and Dimps developed a few fighting games that were published by Sammy (like Fighting Fish for example), so their relationship is very similar to the one Capcom had with SNK in the 90s. But once the publisher Sammy ceased to exist, it through a wrench into Capcom's plans. I wish I could remember where I read this. I know it was something I read online back around 2011 or so, I just can't remember where. Wikipedia? If so, which page? IDK. EDIT: OH JOY, just found an article detailing the cancelled game. Check it out here: capcom.fandom.com/wiki/Sammy_vs._CapcomSo I wasn't hallucinating! Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much information about the game since it was apparently cancelled less than a year after it was announced, which would make sense since Sammy folded in 2004 and the game was only announced in 2003. But it does offer a glimpse into what could have been. So, there's Tekken x Street Fighter and now Sammy Vs Capcom. I wonder what other cancelled Capcom Vs games there are, if any? This topic really fascinates me since Capcom Vs is my favorite Capcom fighting series and in fact the only Capcom fighting franchise that I actually care about, since I don't like Street Fighter overall and I haven't played any of the others like Rival Schools, Darkstalkers, Cyberbots or Plasma Sword.

The big majority of Jump properties are owned by Bandai, such as Knights Of The Zodiac, Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, One Piece, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, etc., which means it could still be Namco Vs. Capcom, but a very specific section of Namco without the likes of Ace Combat, SoulCalibur, Tekken, Ridge Racer, etc..
