This game is like someone spliced F-Zero-X and Mario Kart together. There are anti-gravity vehicles, with a power-ups with homing missiles, shields and boosts. Plus, there's a fuel/health bar that can only be replenished by consuming your pick-ups like first aid kits.
But the braking system is finny, with a left brake and a right brake. Also, it doesn't have those Mario Galaxy/Sonic Lost Worlds tracks where the road is round and not flat, unlike F-Zero-X.

I like the series but never got real into it, had some fun with several titles in the series but never played them a lot.

The Omega Collection is pretty fantastic on VR. Mind blowing to say the least. I almost shed a tear the first time I played it. I never got motion sickness from it even without all the aids, but for those new to VR I may recommend the aids. However is still to me one of the best VR games that exist alongside EA Star Wars Squadrons.
Another one I love is the HD WipEout collection on the PS3 because it comes in stereoscopic 3D, and if you have a giant projector screen at home, it is quite an amazing experience too. These so call gimmicks really elevate the experience to a whole new level of height. It turns them into something special.
I also heard good things about the handheld version. I believe it is on the Vita at least, and I know for a fact these type of games are always fun on the go. If I can enjoy Fast RMX on handheld mode, even with all that rubber banding, I'm pretty sure I would enjoy WipEout on that form too.
I have to admit that F-Zero is a whole different beast. In no way, shape, or form WipEout can substitute the gameplay mastery you get from playing F-Zero games over and over again. The learning curve is significantly different, and WipEout doesn't give you the same type of flow dopamine satisfaction you get with F-Zero, but overtime I believe you can get to enjoy both equally as much.
