Utter garbage. An interesting premise for a shooter but horribly executed. Gligar nailed it with his excellent review:
The fact that there is no dedicated servers or mic chat in a 201X shooter is just fucking unbelievable. The art direction is also shockingly crude and uninspired for a Nintendo IP.
Easily one of my least favorite Nintendo IPs. I can't imagine anyone outside of teeny tots wanting to play this garbage. Splatoon reminds me that Nintendo is all washed up now.

I actually tried the Wii U version and play extensively, even till the credits, but to me it was one of those things of the moment like Arms, or Pokkén Tournament, that are cool while they are still hot, but die away soon after. It usually happened to me with many of the games from that generation like Star Fox Zero.
I can see people still liking it on the Switch, so it doesn't surprise me it still has a following, but they hype died for me with the first one. You could say I had enough of it, like it is the case with many newer Nintendo games that aren't flagships.

I found the game interesting when it came out. My son has 2 on the Switch, because he got it for a Christmas present. Both of us really don't like it. I have nephews who absolutely love it though. They're in their early teens, and I think they were targeted appropriately by Nintendo's advertising. One of them streamed 2 and now 3 frequently. I actually enjoy watching them play, but it isn't for me. The IP is loved by that generation, and they just eat it up like we did with the IPs of our generation. As for the game itself, I think it is an interesting twist to capture the flag. The battle royale style is G-rated, and there is a lot of fun involved in it. I never liked the motion-controlled aiming, but it isn't mandatory. I was surprised to see how many kids actually used it though. I tried to get into 2, but I'm not a big time online only player. I wanted more of a single player experience, so it wasn't meant for me. As for 3, I can't speak about it, because my son really doesn't care to get it, and I'm not going to pick it up for the lolz. Overall, I think the series is loved in the newer generation, and I don't think it is all based on hype, stratogustav. With every sequel, kids gobble up copies, and they get more and more serious about it as they get older.

Oh yeah, I mentioned that it is still beloved by many, when I talked about hype I was referring to just my personal experience with it.
