If any Australian hasn't seen this, or they've never heard of Paul Hogan, then they're lying about being Australian and probably should be reported for espionage.
It's a very casual fish-out-of-water story of a naive bushman brought into the peak of 80's progress, with only a few conflicts scattered around to raise the stakes a little. Apart from the drug and sexual references, it's very family friendly.

I would watch these multiple times when they would air them on TV either late at night or randomly a Saturday afternoon. For some reason I was a fan, however I don't remember a thing.

Here's what I have to say about Crocodile Dundee: 1: I have not seen the film 2: I do not want to see the film 3: I have no plans to see the film 4: It glamorizes the worst men that Australia has to offer. I have to agree with australian social critic Robert Hughes' analysis of the film as glamorizing or romanticizing the wrong type of Australian men to american audiences. His blog: web.archive.org/web/20010413171427/http://www.pbs.org/wnet/australia/qa.html5: It sugar coats the real life image of the conservative bushwackers of the australian outback, portraying them as being far less gun worshiping, regressive, and trigger happy than they really are. Rodney Ansell, AKA the real life Crocodile Dundee upon who this movie was based, was in reality a gun-worshiping, trigger-happy poacher who shot salt water crocs just for sport and in fact died in a shootout with australian police after a decade of drug bingeing messed up his noggin. True story. So, not only does it glamorize the worst people in australia, but it also doesn't even accurately portray them. In reality, animated villains like Percival McLeach from the Rescuer's Down Under and the poachers from that episode of Jonny Quest are ironically closer to the real image of real life far-right bushwackers like Rodney Ansell than Paul Hogan's portrayal in this film is.   Guns, guns, guns. I've come to accept that the word "poacher" is really just another way of saying "outback bushwacker". When it comes to disrespecting wildlife they're among the king of the hill. You can't count on australian filmmakers to portray australian conservatives accurately, but at least Disney and Hanna Barbera were willing to. Go figure. I suspect that the makers of Crocodile Dundee might have been Australian nationalists. I'm gonna go out on a limb by giving Crocodile Dundee a 1/5. It fails at delivering the authentic outback right-wing aussie. I hate the fact that it lied to me about who Rodney Ansell really was like in life. |

Oh, and if you want another example of right-wing bushwackers portrayed more accurately in cinema, there's also the baddies from Fern Gully 2  These poaching blokes are all way closer to Rodney Ansell than the character Michael Dundee was. Further proof that Crocodile Dundee sugar-coats and glorifies the wrong kinds of people. Even fan documentaries by actual aussies present the real life Michael Dundee AKA Rodney Ansell as he really was: a shameless poacher "He told (lied to) his then-girlfriend that he was going on a fishing trip, though he later confided to others that he was really there to illegally poach crocs" There you have it. Props to the guy who made this little documentary without glorifying the down under douchebag in question. He was a poacher AND a liar! Centipede, shame on you for not being honest with us by glossing over all the inaccuracies of this film's portrayal of outback blokes! Instead, I had to show up and save the day by providing the cold, hard facts, as usual. I'm gonna start policing you more often just so we don't keep getting the facts wrong. This movie sucks and Centipede sucks for idolizing these nefarious, outback wankers. |

I should've just laid ALL of the blame on the filmmakers and Rodney Ansell instead of lashing out at the general movie going public of the land down under. The real crocodile Dundee AKA Rodney Ansell might've been a wicked criminal, but then again, I have publicly defended criminals in my native country such as mass shooters and serial killers. I love those dudes. They are my brothers and sisters. So I probably came across as a hypocrite by demonizing foreign criminals like Rodney Ansell despite have defended american "criminals" several times in the past on these boards. I personally hate Rodney Ansell, but you could argue that he was just merely a product or a victim of a bad society or a bad industry just like Michael Brutsch allegedly is, or someone similar like that.
