WHY WHY WHY?
I'm mainly a Nintendo & retro fan who's had a ps3 for the past few months. I'll tell you, looking for games is hard. I just find them all to be dark, very mature and generally an fps. What happened?

Not looking in the right places? I can recommend some games on PS3 that aren't dark/overly violent/fps.
3D Dot Game Heroes Atelier series Cars 2: The Video Game (this was surprisingly good) Disgaea series Dragon's Crown DuckTales Remastered Eternal Sonata LittleBigPlanet series Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale Puppeteer Ratchet and Clank series Rayman Origins/Legends Shovel Knight Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time Sonic Generations Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing/Transformed Tales series Under Defeat

I really appreciate your recommendations, feel free to suggest more

Sure I can do that.
Dynasty Warriors/Samurai Warriors/Warriors Orochi series Enslaved: Odyssey to the West Hyperdimension Neptunia series Journey collection LEGO series Midway Arcade Origins Mirror's Edge Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection The Guided Fate Paradox The King of Fighters XIII Ultra Street Fighter IV
I couldn't get into these myself(I think they're well made, just don't think I'm into the genre) but many like them: Minecraft Terraria
If not opposed to digital: Castle Crashers Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara Mamorukun Curse Mega Man 9 & 10 Raiden IV Sound Shapes Worms series

I think this has come about because new hardware allows these themes to be delivered in manner that is convincing and not cheesy. Also old games just don't seem mature by comparison. Games like Castlevania just simply cannot compare to something like Dead Space when it comes to mature gameplay/aesthetic.

Film is going through the same thing. Whenever times are economically bad, art gets dark. When things are going better, media is more lighthearted. Just look at how dark and gritty films, comics, etc. of the 1940s (war-time) were VS the happy-go-lucky stuff of the 50's and 60's.

Here we go again with the overexaggeration.
Anyways, like movies, new games push the boundaries on what's allowed. Therefore video games have matured in some ways, but don't fool yourself; there exist all types of games today.

Far Cry 2 & 3 were very bright and colorful games, but I know what you mean. I think since the dawn of 3D gaming, games have generally become more and more focused on realism and less interested on color, for whatever reason. It really isn't a new thing; if you look at a lot of the big AAA releases in the past, particularly those exclusive to Sony's PS1-PS3 consoles, like Metal Gear Solid 1+2, SOCOM, GTA 3 and onwards, Killzone, Splinter Cell, Metal of Honor, Resident Evil, you'll notice that those games are all generally dark, realistic and gritty. It's definitely not a new trend, but it has gotten noticeably worse these last 2 generations.

While games got all dark and edgy and brown somewhere around the middle 2000s (think of the influence CoD and Gears of War had around that time - hell, even Sonic got a gritty, dark shooter spinoff), nowadays most of the big releases I see around are really colorful and somewhat upbeat - look at Witcher 3, Mirror's Edge Catalyst, SUPERHOT and others. Most of the big shows at this year's E3 were also for colorful games like ReCore, Scalebound, NieR Automata (which will probably have a depressing story, but its presentation is still very bright), Bloodstained, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Sea of Thieves, Grow Up and many, many others. In other words, I don't get the criticism. It seems to be 10 years too late. By the way, get Mirror's Edge. It's awesome!

I was going to blame this on many reasons, but thinking about it I'm going to blame it on current 3D technology. These days the current engines (Unreal 3, 4 and Unity) have extremely poor cel-shading and designing everything in cartoon style from the ground-up a la Serious Sam 2 is just not as cost-effective. The most cartoon-ish looking 3D engine I can think of is Source, and the bloody thing is 12 years old now.
With 2D I don't think I can complain, even violent games like Hotline Miami and games that I absolutely hate like Ephemerid are colorful and have a nice presentation.
