Sonic X-treme, as some of you probably already know, was a 3D Sonic game that was in development for the Sega Saturn and was to be Sonic's big entry into 3D gaming. It featured some rather unique level design for a 3D platformer from that time period, and the game was highly anticipated among Sonic fans, Sega fans, and Saturn owners alike. However, after a troubled production and a beta which was deemed unimpressive by the producers, the game was officially cancelled in 1997.
So, my question today is how do you feel about its cancellation? Are you glad it was cancelled? Or would you have really liked to try it out and wish it had been completed & released? Please let me know!

Sonic Extreme had potential. As someone who rooted for Sonic over Mario, I was disappointed when the best Sega could do was a port of Sonic 3D Blast. It was not even half of what it needed to take on Mario 64.
But, from what footage I've seen of it, the platforming aspect of it would have been somewhat slow. At least in hindsight, because the 90's Sonic games look slow compared to watching Sonic outrun a killer whale or a GUN truck. Sonic was meant for speed, so if Sonic R was built as more of an adventure game (more like Sonic Unleashed) than a wonky racer, it would've given the Saturn something unique.
At least, in spirit, Sonic Xtreme lives on through Sonic Lost World.

Going by the gameplay footage we have seen, Sonic Xtreme would be very, very similar to the gameplay in Bug! / Bug Too!, two other Sega games for the Saturn. And let me say it: 3d platforming using sprites in that perspective... just doesn't work. The platforming in the Bug games was most often infuriating because it was too hard to judge distances, and with Sonic Xtreme being a much faster game, I can only see the problems getting worse. So, it was better for Sonic to wait until Adventure - even with all its problems, Adventure was a very impressive game at its release. By the way, Sonic Xtreme couldn't even manage to impress me as much as Nights, so... Yeah, if Nights couldn't have saved the Saturn, I doubt Xtreme would've made any difference. centipede - Yep, its spirit lives in Lost World. And I f****** hate that game! Look at my complaints in the "What are you all playing" thread.

I am indifferent to the cancelation. I did not own a Genesis until the Saturn was on it's way out the door, and I was a Nintendo and later Sony guy growing up (though I did have the Master System)... so it's not that I was particularly interested in the game from what I saw. I had read that after Sega saw Mario 64 in action, the scrapped everything they had made up to that point and decided to name the NiGHTS character their new mascot. That said... I feel awesome for being the guy that found the long-lost Anti-Gravity Room Sonic X-Treme footage a few years back. The tape was sitting in a box in my closet for a decade and a half and I had no idea anyone was even looking for it. I uploaded the video at like 2am one morning, sent the guy that asked me if I could track it down a message before going to work and returned to something like 7,000 views a few hours later. I didn't expect anyone would get much out of it, but I guess that shows what I know.

Hey! That's awesome, spooie! And I'm indifferent to that cancellation. I just didn't know about it back then and I'm not sure it would have changed much about Sonic to be important.

Awesome video spooie. It saddens me all those amazing games from the era only look good on CRT TVs nowadays, so if you don't have one, you are screwed.

I don't think many of the older systems look back on an HDTV, although the N64 tends to look REALLY BAD on mine.

Can't say I've ever lost any sleep over it.
Edit: But it's a cool topic nonetheless. Let's face it: the game is probably more interesting as an unreleased title than if it'd made it to the Saturn.

Yeah, I always recommend a Sony Trinitron Wega for all non-HD games, either 32 or 36 inches, but a 28 inches is not that bad.
The only classic games I've seen that look great on modern TVs are the second gen and under ones like:
- Dig-Dug - Scramble - Galaxian - Asteroids - Tempest - Pac-Man - Defender - Ms. Pac-Man - Galaga - Centipede - Missile Command - Robotron 2084 - Millipede - Donkey Kong - Mario Bros. - Joust - Berzerk - Lunar Lander - Pole Position - Frogger - Xevious - Zaxxon - Gyruss - Space Invaders - Pong - Breakout - Laser Gates - Vanguard, etc..
