Haha are we too old for this stuff? Fair question.
I actually enjoyed this movie a lot. They played it extremely safe. Even the length felt way too short compared to all movies coming out these days.
They used a lot of recognisable Mario references so fans can stay entertained throughout the movie. Basically cheap shots that actually work to please.
Because I didn't want to get spoilers before the movie came out at some point I didn't even know if it was going to have live action parts or not. So embarrassing enough I was waiting for live action parts when the movie started, even fairly into the movie still.
I would say the movie was the good kind of average for commercial movies. Fun to watch, easy on the eyes, without unnecessary controversy, and very in tune with the modern Mario franchise. I would go as far as to say it felt canon to an extent.
Good work from Nintendo and the Hollywood studio.

The fact that Nintendo chose Seth Rogan to voice a major character in their Mario movie is just baffeling. After the adult-oriented fiasco that was Sausage Party you'd think that all major studios would have blacklisted Seth Rogan from appearing in any children's films by now, especially a studio like Nintendo.
I guess Nintendo was pretty hands-off with this one, kinda like how Sega was with the recent Sonic movie, with Yugi Naka expressing shock at the original version of Sonic being an example of how hands-off these cinematic projects really are for the game companies. This is just my hypothesis, but I can't imagine a kid-friendly chap like Miyamoto wanting Rogan in any of his Mario projects.
I mean, if you want an example of how touchy Nintendo is with preserving their kid-friendly image, just look at their response to Clay Fighter 63 1/3 Sculpter's Cut and Conker's Bad Fur Day. For the former they demanded that Interplay remove an alcoholic fighter from the game (even though Nintendo didn't even publish it) and with the latter they outright dropped support of Rareware altogether just for making it, which led Rare to be bought out by Microsoft. Their stance against adult humor/content is legendary.
Seth Rogan has developed such a contested, contentious reputation for his humor that casting him in a kid's film would literally be like casting Andy Dick or Nick Swardson in a kid's film, and considering this is NINTENDO backing this project I can't help but be amazed that they let Rogan in.
I, for one, wouldn't want to let Rogan anywhere near my kid's film if I were making one.
