Today, I would like to ask: which company, Sega or Nintendo, contributed more to the on-rails shooter genre overall? *NOT including light-gun games
VS
(sorry for the juxtaposition of image sizes, I didn't want to take the time to find images that were all similar in size)
I thought this would make for a perfect WHO DEFEATZ, since both Sega and Nintendo have each been known for making at least two on-rails series that are regarded today as being innovative classics: Star Fox and Sin and Punishment in the case of Nintendo and Space Harrier and Panzer Dragoon in the case of Sega. Sega also made Rez, a cleaver vector-graphics-ish on-rails shooter for the PS2 that received positive remarks at the time of its release, particularly for it's audio and visuals.
I'm not as familiar with Sony's earlier first party lineup, especially their daunting output for the PS1, so since I don't know of any significant Sony on-rails shooters, and since Microsoft themselves haven't been known for any major contributions to this genre, outside of Panzer Dragoon Orta (which they didn't even publish), I figured I would just keep the duel between Sega and Nintendo, the most classic comparison one can make.
So, who do you guys think did more for the on-rails shooter genre? It's an interesting genre that sadly outside of light-gun games hasn't seen much representation in mainstream gaming; even some of the games featured here (namely Sin and Punishment) were outright restricted to the japanese market.
Since we recently had a weekly discussion for the Star Fox series, I thought it would only be fitting that I make a proper WHO DEFEATZ thread pitting the best examples of on-rails shooters that Sega and Nintendo have made against each other. I figure that this is a timeless question in the history of video games and that this debate will only continue to rage on among gamers for eons to come, since all four of these franchises (Space Harrier, Star Fox, Panzer Dragoon, and Sin & Punishment) really are that significant in the history of video games!
I also figured I would have to choose to post this thread in either the Nintendo or the Sega sub-forum, so I just decided to post it in the Sega forum. That's not an indication of my vote on the subject (I grew up with Nintendo after all, who I'm also more familiar with), but rather just a flip-of-the-coin kind of decision making I went with. I suppose I could have posted it in the arcade sub-forum since the on-rails-shooter genre is very much of arcade origins.
LET'S DEBATE!
