Each generation, the companies have a tendency to one up the last gen. I think that's coming close to being impractical. We are clsoe to tht point, if we're not there already. What's the point of spending millions on a game when it's not fun and doesn't sell?
Your average AAA game has like a few hundred people workign on it. A game like Suepr Mario Land on the Gameboy had like 8 people.

centipede, I feel like gaming is similar to Moore's law. The people over at Intel think it is still thriving, while the people over at Nvidia think it is dead. I'm not sure about computing, but I can tell from gaming it sure is dead. I still know people who refuse to get a PS5, because the upgrade doesn't seem to be that significant. Obviously there are improvements in speed and HD space, but there are plenty of games that are released on the PS 4 simultaneously. I remember developers doing that for both the SNES and the NES for a few years after the launch of the SNES. There was a considerable downgrade to get the NES game (which now a days are collectors items, because no one in their right mind bought them). You really can't tell the difference between the "downgraded" PS4 games.

Things will change soon. Quantum computing and artificial intelligence makes everything crazy. Just like at that Matrix demo is pretty insane considering how fluent are all those NPCs.
Sooner or later you can just ask AI to make you game based on any crazy idea you have.
In my opinion we will enter to a period where everything is costume, and I'm not sure how companies can survive in that environment. Some kind of restrictions may be put in place to protect these companies, but beyond that I don't know how the industry can survive much longer the way it is now.
