If someone tasked me with making the SSB series great competitive fighting games again, here's how I would fix them:
Step 1: Make the gameplay mimic either Melee or Smash 64. This is what all the greatest fan mods do: either they're melee mods, Smash 64 mods, or Brawl mods that emulate Melee's gameplay. That's how competitive Smash SHOULD be. Brawl, Sm4sh and Ultimate don't do anything better from a competitive point of view.
Step 2: Get rid of guest fighters. The Smash games were originally just an exclusively Nintendo-themed crossover fighter, but all that changed when Brawl hit the market. Now suddenly Nintendo was renting out their series to out-of-the-loop fools like Hideo Kojima who don't understand what the series was about. Nintendo literally has so many first party characters that there's literally no reason to include guest fighters at all. All they do is harm the identity of the series.
And I think that's it. That's all you'd need to do to make the Smash Bros series great again. Step 1 would make them viable (if not sensationally popular) as tournament fighters again, and step 2 would fix all the complaints long time hardcore Nintendo fans have had with the direction the series has taken since Brawl.
Bingo. Problem solved. Next question.
