Eryi’s Action is a game that hates you. It wants you dead and will try to kill you at almost every step(or jump). If playing Super Mario Bros. has you wanting to throw your controller than it’s probably best to pass on this one. But for fans of platformers who won’t mind having to rely on memorization a lot may have a lot of fun with Eryi’s Action, an indie Japanese platformer for the PC. The game looks and sounds pretty good for a cheap indie release. The art style is appealing enough and the graphics are bright and colorful. It’s very light and cheery for a game that will kill you so often. The sound effects and music fit the game well even if they aren’t very memorable.
Eryi’s Action only has about a dozen levels and is fairly short but will take a while to beat. Right from the get-go, the game tries to kill you even before Eryi leaves her house by dropping a wash tub on her. The player can even be killed on the overworld map so their is no time that Eryi is safe unless the game is paused. The player is treated to infinite lives but they start at x3 and once all of those are lost it will go into x- just to remind the player how much he/she has died. And anyone who plays this game will die a lot.
The level design from the start can be brutal. Enemies pop up out of the ground, spikes fall from the sky and a lot more with all the cunning traps in the game. Passing the goal at the end may kill the player before finding a way around a trap at the end of a level. Some traps can be a little frustrating as death will be met on them over and over again but infinite lives and several checkpoints per level alleviates it a lot. So big sections of the game won’t have to be played over and over again.
Eryi’s Action can be a sadistic game with it’s level design but it is fun. The controls are simple and responsive. Eryi can jump, dash, and pick up/throw items/baddies. Just finding all the different traps and ways to die is fun itself and some of them take a little puzzle solving to get past. There are no big brain-busters though, most of it revolves around trail and error as well as quick reflexes. Aside from the normal platforming, there is some variety thrown in with boss fights. Some levels consist of flying or swimming horizontally and trying to dodge obstacles. The flying/swiming levels and bosses are really hard also and require quick reflexes.
Overall, Eryi’s Action is a fun indie platformer. But even with plenty of save points and infinite lives, most people who try it probably won’t finish it due to the high difficulty. It’s only $5 and is fun to play though so it offers enough bang for the buck. Nyu Media has been bringing us a lot of indie/quirky japanese titles to PC and hopefully the trend continues. For it’s price, this could be recommended to any fans of platformers so long as they don’t have anger issues because this game will frustrate. For those who don’t mind that though, may have a lot of fun.
