Well boys, here it is. This is it. The thread we have all been waiting for. The thread I have been hyping up for f*cking YEARS.
Gentlemen of the pub, in honor of the scariest day of the year (Friday the 13th), I present to you for discussion one of the most horrifying concepts known to man: I am speaking of course of none other than the very bone-chilling idea, the very staple of many science fiction novels and a trademark of far-right libertarian sci-fi like Star Wars: C O N C R E T E D Y S T O P I A S
Concrete dystopia: a lifeless, artificial environment where the cold, lifeless climate of space matches machine-made syntho-metallic superstructures. A place where neither flora nor fauna can thrive. A land where urban sprawl has consumed everything, including all life. The true definition of "Hell on Earth" or "Paradise Lost". An overdeveloped anthill, if you will.
Genre: Science Fiction, i.e. dystopian fiction
Examples: Coruscant, Nar Shaddaa, Nal Hutta, Ord Mantell (Star Wars sure has a LOT of them, doesn't it?), Cybertron, Dr. Robotnik's Little Planet, Earth in "Lost in Space" (1998), neo Gotham City (Batman Beyond), Metropolis (1927), Metropolis (2001), etc.
What do you guys think of Concrete Dystopias? What do you think of it as a concept? As an idea? As a reality for Earth? Should Earth be turned into a concrete dystopia? What arguments (if any) do you have against or in favor of concrete dystopias? Are there any additional comments you'd like to make about concrete dystopias? How scary on a scale of 1 to 10 do you think the concept of concrete dystopias are? And, can you guys think of any other examples of concrete dystopias in media that I failed to mention?
PLEASE DISCUSS!
