Oooo, I hated this film. I am a huge fan of the TV show, but I still loathed this film (Mr. Bean's first) because it ruined the humor from the show. The reason? It turned it into gross-out humor. In the show, when someone defecates or vomits, the camera never actually showed it. But in the film, when it recreates a scene from the show where Mr. Bean inflates a barf bag like a balloon on an airplane and proceeds to pop it, the director actually shows the barf exploding all over the place, which ruined the joke. So not only did this movie turn Mr. Bean into gross-out humor, but it also recycled a lot of jokes from the show.
For that reason, there's literally no incentive to watch the movie because the show did everything better and did it first. I give Mr. Bean '97 a 2/5 because it was a rehashed, westernized, disgusting focus-group tested adaption of a classic TV sitcom.
On a side note, even though I haven't seen it, I've heard good things about Mr. Bean's Holiday. It doesn't seem to have as much gross out humor or toilet humor as this film does. I'm not sure it rehashes as many jokes either.

I think the problem with this movie was it wasn't what anyone was familiar with. Mr. Bean was in England going about his business in a series of short episodic sketches, without very much dialogue. I can't quite put my finger on it, but they gave it more plot than it needed?
At least we now know what he does for a living.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but they gave it more plot than it needed? At least we now know what he does for a living. Yes, this (the plot) was ANOTHER problem with the movie. The plot for this movie was just absurd. It made Mr. Bean into some sort of weird mailman or government agent or something. I can't even remember what it is that he was doing, or for what purpose. Keep in mind that I saw this movie all the way back in '99 or '98 so my memory on it is extremely fuzzy. But I do remember that the plot/premise was nothing like the show, which was just a series of whimsical day-to-day outings gone haywire, Mr. Bean-style. Again, this is another area where I've heard Mr. Bean's Holiday shines because the plot in that movie mirrors the kind that were used in the show's episodes. I've heard Mr. Bean's Holiday basically feels like a faithful feature-length adaption of an episode of the show, compared to whatever the hell this movie was. I should really get around to seeing Mr. Bean's Holiday. So that's three key problems with this movie: gross-out humor, recycled jokes, and an irrelevant plot/premise. Great analysis, Centipede. This reminds me why you are by far the coolest moderator the boards ever had. I'm proud to share this forum with a fellow Mr. bean fan. You do excellent work here, my man. Keep it up!

It feels like Mr. Bean has a lot of content, but if you look closely, he really doesn't.
