I'm going to be getting a wimpy laptop in the near future that won't be able to handle games like CS: Source, but it probably will be strong enough to handle a simpler, less demanding game like CS 1.6 (AKA CS classic or CS 1).
I played the hell out of CS Source on my old PC and loved every second of it, but unfortunately my old PC has long since died from severe virus attack. I don't have the money to buy a new gaming PC but I would LOVE to be able to play Counter Strike again.
And so I ask, is CS 1.6 available as a free download (legally)? And how would I go about playing it online? I mean, are there still servers dedicated to it? If so, how do I access them? Does anyone know?
Please help me out!

As far as I know, you need to cough up $9.99 on the steam store to get it. And yes, there are still a good amount of people playing it since it's the go-to game that most of the diehard CS fans play. I don't think 1.6 is going to be deserted any time this century.
If you already own the original half-life, you can download versions of the original Counter Strike back before it became a standalone game (1.5 and below). Since they were just mods back then they're free. The thing is I don't know what the online population is like for those versions.
I would recommend UT4 since it's free but there's no way in hell it's running on that laptop I'm assuming.

I can't believe it's not a free download anymore. $10 for a game that was originally just a free mod for Half Life seems utterly ridiculous. Even $5 is pushing it for 1.6.
And unfortunately, I don't own a copy of the original Half Life, either. But I do plan on playing it someday, so 1.5 is probably what I'll go for. I appreciate the info. Thanks mon!
Too bad I won't even be getting a computer that could run it anytime soon. T_T
Also, what does "UT4" stand for?

MeleeMonk - Only UT4 is free, and, right now, it's still in alpha stage/early access, so it's not really a fully released game. But yes, you can play it. I haven't because I'm not into multiplayer shooters, but I heard it's fun.

Neat. I'm a huge fan of the original Unreal Tournament on PC, so it would be interesting to play this newest one to see how it compares.
