Not sure if anyone is a Patreon member but he emailed his patrons.
“ For better or worse (I think the better) I'm calling the YouTube channel a loss and writing it off completely. It's losing money at an unacceptable rate and I can't waste any more time on video that doesn't bring in new viewers.”
In a follow up email:
“ This is the direction of the show for a long list of reasons. I need to move this brand out of the angry reviews-drama category and into an actual adult format across platforms. It has to attract new listeners by the end of the year.
I've been working 12-14 hour days 7 days a week lately (and I still have a family!), which, as you can imagine, doesn't leave much room for anything else. If CGR is going to make it into its 26th year, this is it. I hope you enjoy the podcast version and the outtakes.”
“ Classic Game Room The Podcast is picking up where Classic Game Room the show left off and will continue its never-ending-mission to review everything (in arcades, at least!)"
This is the final version of CGR according to him

Mark is a filmmaker, so it is because of this background that his content is of quality. This is something difficult to market with the attention spam people have nowadays.
Other qualities he has is his incredible charisma, his fantastic sense of humor, his unique perspective on things. This is something only he can provide because even though many people have these qualities, they don't have them from the unique perspective that he presents them will.
Once peoole are exposed to this they automatically become fans assuming they are mentally normal.
That exposure is hard to accomplish because you are competing with multiple things. However it is possible to market it. It is also possible to profit from it.
The hardest thing is finding the right people, as oppose of doing everything by himself, and yes promoting itself under the same name and umbrella on different platforms.
I would say shorts on TikTok, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram are a good way to do it. At least to get promoted. Then having that quality content ready for those that become enthusiasts.

I didn't actually realize the Patreon was still around. I had gone looking for it a while ago, and it hadn't popped up. Thanks for the news, kevpez.

Yeah, not to spoil his Patreon exclusive updates but I figured it’s important for you all to know. I understand he’s frustrated, but I don’t think he’s done himself many favors. The algorithm doesn’t know what to do with him. Is he short videos? Almost hour long videos? Comics? Podcasts? Plus the huge hiatus. It’ll take time for the algorithm to pick it up. As for subscribers not getting notified. It MAY have been less of an issue because he all have been hearing the “ring the bell” thing for years..but he was on hiatus. I get it, he has a business. He has to do what he needs

I've noticed lately, there are only a couple of game reviews and it's mostly music or podcast related. If he's lacking games, I got a whole heap to donate.
His old reviews never went more than four minutes, right? Are people's attention spans really that shit?
And if he's trying for a younger audience, it would be a niche part of it, because that generation is all about PS5/Series X and phone gaming, besides the Switch.

My guess is that he expect instant results, which sadly isn’t how it works. Huge hiatus, different style videos, etc. the algorithm had NO idea what CGR is anymore. He’s has to pick a style, stick to it, and do the YouTube things like reminding people to click the bell. Everyone knows about clicking the bell, we went through it years ago. However Mark was gone. He’s never once mentioned the stupid bell since returning.

His old reviews never went more than four minutes, right? Are people's attention spans really that shit? And if he's trying for a younger audience, it would be a niche part of it, because that generation is all about PS5/Series X and phone gaming, besides the Switch. That's why I thought his comeback had a great start, as he was reviewing some cool, newer games, like the latest MS Flight Simulator and Starfield, while mixing them with his usual Arcade/Atari/Genesis/Vectrex stuff. I think the show was picking up steam, with each new video getting more views. There were three problems, though: 1) CGR 2085 was great, well produced, but it was obviously more time consuming without getting any better numbers than the 5-10 minute reviews, while also being hard to be discovered by new audiences. Someone who just played Starfield might be looking for reviews on Youtube and see Mark's video, like it, subscribe to the channel and watch other stuff; but his Mechwarrior 5 review is "hidden" within his CGR 2085 episode - people who already watch the show will see it, but I doubt someone who just played MW5 and doesn't know what CGR is would watch this 50 minute video in which MW5 is just a small section. That's why I think CGR 2085 would work better as an extra/special show (let's say, one episode per month or every two months) while the shorter reviews would still be the main thing. That's why I think the show lost steam again after CGR 2085 was released as the main thing; 2) Mark went quickly back to mainly Atari stuff, which, as centipede said, doesn't attract younger viewers - it really needs to be interspersed with games made at least since 2015. 3) Even for people who really enjoy CGR, there was a huge push for music content that I guess a major part of CGR's audience isn't really interested in. That might even have damaged viewership numbers for CGR 2085, as there was usually a substantial section dedicated to music. Those are all just personal impressions. Also, as kevpez said, it would inevitably take some time for CGR to grow again - even doing everything right, I guess it would take an entire year to start seeing really good numbers.

I honestly watch a bunch of people who never say ring the bell and subscribe, and they are doing just fine. I think there are other issues at play here. Maybe he is remembering that YouTube blows in the first place. I do agree that it may be problematic that he isn't doing the 4 minute reviews. I miss the fun and quick videos that were more informative than a stupid short. He also mentioned that there was a family emergency too. I think there are a lot of issues at play here. I hope he gets a boost from his recent video with Metal Jesus.
