This week, we're hitting the track again with another game adaptation. Allegedly also based on a true story, it's...
Year: 2023
Starring: David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Archie Madekwe, Darren Barnet, Geri Halliwell Horner, Djimon, Hounsou
Directed by: Neill Blomkamp
Screenplay by: Jason Hall, Zach Baylin, Alex Tse

I actually enjoyed this movie. I'm huge Gran Turimo fan, and I feel this film gives a good representation of what having passion for the game looks like. In many ways even since its beginnings, because it was sold as a simulator, in the mind of fans the experience level up is translated to real life as well.
I remember when they did the Gran Turismo Academy and they were offering real driving licenses with Gran Turismo Sport, with the promise of obtaining the skill requirements for racing in real life race cars. For those that never had the financial means to do it on their own it was a great opportunity, and many took advantage of it.
As a marketing campaign it works, because even for those that didn't have that ambition, knowing it is possible to come out from you setup at home and still be able to compete, gives you the strange rationalization that even playing at home you are enjoying driving close enough to the real experience, and that's good publicity that works.
Since the PS1 Gran Turismo has become a household name for PlayStation in the same way Mario and Zelda are for Nintendo or Sonic for Sega. Alongside Final Fantasy and Tekken, Grant Turismo was the console's flagship franchise, and having its own movie simply makes sense at this point.
The movie isn't groundbreaking or anything special, but I don't think it was disappointing either. If you are a fan of the game you can at the very least have a good time watching it once.

Is it just a Fast and Furious knock-off?

Not really, feels more like an indie film, not mainstream comedy or anything like that, nothing special, but entertaining.
