I have heard it should have only been two movies and wasn't as good. I am reluctant to see them.

I've never seen them, but I can imagine it's a more lighthearted version of LotR. But surely, they can't be that bad, can they?

I didn't like them on release, however, they got somewhat better when the extended versions released funnily enough. I know people hate them for adding to much shit that wasn't in the book, but who cares? This is another medium.

They're not terrible by any means, it's just that compared to how great LotR was, these ones do not fare well at all. They're average.
Much better than Rings of Power, though. That one is the real stinker.

I guess I would say that I'm in the middle on this series as a whole. Balder, I get hating book snobs, I really do. However, I feel like they added stuff to the movies, just because they wanted to put on those nostalgia goggles and make a buck. I liked the first movie, and when they added a bit of The Silmarillion in it, I was excited. It was the 2nd movie that I felt was a let down. I don't mind additional material to make the movie flow, but this movie had added material just to stretch out the playtime so they could justify making 3 films. I know this may sound like nerd talk, but I wasn't a big fan of the "forbidden love" sequence, which was never a part of the story in the first place. I thought the floating barrel scene was way over the top, because they added an extreme fantastical element to it, which was really funny in the source material, and it didn't need to be messed with. Now the 3rd movie was pretty cool. The battle of the 5 armies was done extremely well, and I enjoyed how the movie finished. For me, the problem lies in the fact that the book is too small for 3 films, yet they stretched it to make that money. To make things worse Guillermo del Toro, was originally supposed to do the movies, as discussed in the video below. Because they switched directors, the movies were rushed. They didn't get the polish the LotR movies got. It's a shame, really, because there was something great in the source material which was not fully translated to the big screen. I'm not saying that they're awful, but they definitely aren't great either.

"Didn't Earn It" (read: "I got in because daddy has connections!"). Ah, yes! But personally, with RoP, I smell a money laundering racket. You don't have production output that low with one entire giga-dollar.
