I have decided to get back into collecting handheld stuff but I have become shocked when I see the prices of games here in north America. I noticed a lot of Gameboy stuff over in japan is really cheap. I'm talking games sometimes as low as $10 and under on ebay. Not to mention the cover art is really cool. I mostly play on emulators when it comes to Gameboy, Gameboy color, and Gameboy advance games but the only thing I ever really play is Pokémon or Pokémon rom hacks.
There is something to be said about sliding the cartridges' in and out of a system rather than just downloading them all off the internet. When I look at all the games I can play when I download them off a rom site it gets overwhelming and then I don't want to play any of them despite me having plenty to work with. I noticed a lot of these Japanese Gameboy games are really cheap to buy and even for titles that cost a bit more you can always shop around for the best deals or wait for a better deal to show up.

I feel the handheld physical collections are the coolest. I actually thought before about selling my Wii/Wii I collections, but I never considered selling the 3DS or Switch physical games.
I feel what makes the difference is cartridges, for me if the game is a cartridge, like N64, NES, Genesis, or SNES, they are very treasured.
CDs, Blu-ray, and DVD, disc based games feel almost like digital, they feel like cheap pirate stuff. I don't know, but a disc doesn't give me the same satisfaction a cartridge does.
This is why it was easy to give away to my brother my PS1, PS2, Wii, and Wii U libraries, it was an after thought. I don't even admire the mini discs the GameCube uses, which are probably the best of the bunch, but cartridges will always be superior.

There are some cool system variants in Japan, and with the current value of the Yen, you could get some great deals.

I have always liked the Gameboy pocket in yellow the best and I like it more than the Gameboy color even if it can't play Gameboy color exclusive games.

Yeah, the Yen is so down right now, it feels like things are at a permanent discount price, but you have to know the sites, and likely use VPN to take advantage.

Some of these Japanese games for Gameboy and Gameboy color are so cheap compared to their North American releases that its absolutely worth picking them up. I figure as long as they don't have much text then they're fine but even if they do you can use an app like google translate on your phone to translate them. That's what I do for more text heavy games. It's not ideal and it can be tedious but it does work pretty good. I found a whole bunch of Japanese Gameboy and Gameboy color games for really cheap on eBay with free shipping. Unfortunately, some games don't have Japanese releases or have no listings on eBay at all so you will need to find another way to get them.

It is so much more satisfying to put a cartridge in and take it out when done then downloading a bunch of roms off the internet. Something about putting in a cart into a game console is nostalgic to me.

Maybe its that little sound the cart and cart reader make when you put a game in.

I have been ordering a lot of Gameboy and Gameboy color games online and all I can say it is far more fun to collect games than download them off the internet. Whenever I download games I have no urge to play any of them after its done downloading. The Japanese copies are usually so much cheaper to buy than the north American releases. It's fun to collect for the Gameboy and Gameboy color.

Also digital stuff has no value. Unless you are selling the hardware along with it.
Physical cartridges will always be superior and actually hold value.
Not to mention when you have too many options your mind gets overwhelmed and chooses nothing instead of something.
If you are putting a physical game your console at that moment only has one option, and you are more likely to enjoy and appreciate what you are doing.
The only reason why digital is even a thing is because convenience, and space, but other than that, it is mostly a waste of money if you are not even enjoying your collection by playing it.
