It's October again.....FUUUUUUUUU-! But I digress... A Gothic classic, this film was nearly lost to history as it was a blatant plagiarism of Dracula, but it's prints survived to imprint itself on vampiric lore and the horror genre in general. Year: 1922 Starring: Max Shrek, Alexander Granach Directed by: F.W. Murnau

I feel this is like trying to make a game that runs on an 8 bit console. You have to get extra creative to accomplish your goal with those limitations. The fact, that many of these films have survived the test of time, and people still refer to them is enough to demonstrate they belong to their own category of quality not many can reach even with the technology we have today.

It's using what you got. It's like back in the Hayes Code days, where people had to write around it. Here, it's technology. They did a bit of shadow play, like when the vampire reaches out and squeezes her heart. And the carriage scenes were colour inverted to make it look ghostly. It's special now more than what it is today, because CGI can do almost anything.

I remember watching it for the first time in 2010 and being very impressed at how creepy some scenes are. While it's not my favorite movie from the 1920s (Metropolis and Caligari are above it), I think it's a solid effort to adapt Dracula with a more clearly monstrous character and a great atmosphere.
