Why does this need to be a separate console? Why can't it just be a compilation disc? NES-on-a-chip hardware costs have gotten to the point where it's viable I guess, I mean this is going to be 60 dollars which could easily be the price for a compilation or any modern release.

Why does this need to be a separate console? Why can't it just be a compilation disc? It would limit the market to Wii U owners. This way, anyone can buy it. It is crazy to think Nintendo has a console release this Holiday season.

It's another piece of hardware that could have been a disc IMO.

Not really, a lot of Wii U owners are new Nintendo fans. Obviously many are the old fans, but the big majority of Nintendo fans that are all grown up now are into Xbox and PlayStation nowadays because those are the systems with mature content, and didn't get a Wii U because they couldn't afford a second console and many other reasons, so therefore they don't have access to the Virtual Console. They also probably sold their original hardware decades ago. So this is a good opportunity for Nintendo not just to tap into those players nostalgia, but also to give them the opportunity to obtain games they don't have access to on Xbox Live and on the PSN, getting them closer to that Nintendo feeling they probably had been craving for a while.

Just echoing what Stratogustav said. If they released it as a Wii U disc (or group of download codes), that limits it to the very limited number of Wii U owners, and ties it to a console that is in many ways, dead in the water.
This is completely anecdotal, but since I heard of this release, I've been told about it by several friends who are interested in it who fall into a few categories:
-Miss their childhood NES -Never had an NES as a child -Want to introduce their own children to the NES -Haven't bought a Nintendo product in more than a decade, but feel nostalgic for the old grey box
This plays on peoples' nostalgia, and also offers a low-cost way for interested people to try out the NES for the first time. Modern HDMI connections are nice, and although I won't be getting one, I'll probably pick up one of the controllers, since they're Wii remote compatible.
Really, this fits the same demographic as a lot of the plug and play consoles, but comes from Nintendo itself. That's the appeal.

Atari has done both, but the compilation disc is far more successful, but it looks like this Nintendo product has got some wind in it sails before arriving. It's funny, no matter how many mistakes Nintendo has done lately; they still has a few tricks up their sleeves with Pokemon GO and all.

Balder It is not surprise about Pokémon Go. Nintendo is the only Japanese company that didn't properly jump into mobile before. All the other big ones did it already Sega, Namco, SNK, Konami, and even saw more promises in that market than in consoles. While all this was happening Nintendo was still holding up like a boss to the console market, beating the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in Japan by a large margin with the Wii U. So when they finally decided to jump in, they are the biggest, they have the biggest brands, the biggest everything. Of course they were going to murder compare to anyone else. They even beat Candy Crush all time record from 2013 in less than a week. They are also close to beat Google Maps for in app searches. Nintendo also traded the equivalent of 4.5 billion dollars on the stock market on Friday alone, billion with a "b".

"Atari" This has nothing to do with Atari's fall if it's that you're implying.

More of a reference that Atari as it exists now has very little to do with the original Atari beyond brand name. That said, I am glad we've gotten the various plug and play consoles, and compilations of games from the classic Atari systems.

I'm just saying that it's more convenient with a disc than with a whole mini console.

I'll wait for the Sega 32x version, thank you. 30 games is like the complete library. And you'd only care about maybe 4 of them, tops.

I have a good amount of them from back in the day. Shadow Squadron, Metal Head, Cosmic Carnage, VR Racing to name a few.
