After using the Dualshock controllers at great length, I've noticed that they all have one particularly glaring flaw: the D-pad.
Using the Dualshock's D-pad has been one of the most frustrating experiences I've had with Playstation gaming, and gaming as a whole! its so uncomfortable and sluggish, making fighting games near-impossible to be good at with it. Its design is special, but not a good kind of special. I seriously don't get why it's separated and partially submerged under the plastic mold. That aspect seems to cause the pad to bump and rub against the controller, which might explain why it feels so slow and sluggish to use. And I've noticed they tend to get stiffer and sticky with age; my PS3 controller's (which I bought new) D-pad is almost unusable after only 2 years of use, and my PS2 controller's D-pad is outright broken, despite the rest of the controller being in great shape. I don't get it!
It's such a shame because I really, REALLY love everything else about the Dualshock controller. The bumpers are phenominal (the best bumpers I've seen of any controller), the analog sticks are very high quality and the button arrangement is absolutely perfect. Honestly I think the Dualshock 2 is superior to the original Xbox controller for first person shooters simply because the former actually has bumpers (GOOD ones), while the latter does not, and D-pads are mostly inconsequential for that genre anyway.
Am I the only one who fucking deplores the dualshock's D-pad?? I can't be the only one. I think it's the achilles' heel of the Dualshock.

Best D-Pads had always been in the possession of Nintendo for proprietary reasons. Sega, PlayStation, and Xbox, may had better looking ones once in a while, but in terms functionality I haven't seen one matching the quality of Nintendo's D-Pads.
As much as I like Nintendo I don't like this proprietary stuff because it limits other consoles in reaching that ideal functionality.

I also don't like it at all, but I don't find it too aggravating - I mean, it's not as terrible as the 360 one. I agree with stratogustav that Nintendo has seemingly the control of the most functional d-pads, although my favourite d-pad ever is the one used by Sega on the japanese/model-2 controllers for the Saturn (the 3D controller also has a very good d-pad, albeit with a slightly different feel). D-pads are so forgotten nowadays that some 2d games prefer using the analog stick, which is a terrible way to control a 2d character (I'm looking at you, Strider).

I certainly prefer the Nintendo d-pads generally (with the occasional exception like the GameCube), but I've always liked the Sony d-pads as a close second.

On the contrary PlayStation controllers (sans PS4, I haven't had enough time to test it to say if it's as good as the older) are by far the best. Nintendo, Sega and some third parties have had good steering crosses every now and then over the years but they've all had flaws with the controllers otherwise, when PlayStation came along they fixed all that and made a perfect controller, perfect steering cross included.
I have adapters for as many things as I've been able to find to use PlayStation controllers. I currently have adapters for GameCube, Xbox and PC, and the steering cross is one of the top of many reasons for this.

I can name a few non third party d-pads that are objectively worse than the PlayStation D-pad. The Master System, Xbox duke, Xbox 360, Gamecube, and (gasp) Dreamcast d-pads are absolute garbage. PlayStation d-pads are not the best things in the world, but there are much worse out there

Hahaha, hell no man. Do you know what the competition is like for the worst D-pad ever?
I could understand why someone wouldn't like the dualshock d-pad, but there's no way it's worse than the Xbox 360 d-pad, or the plethora of 3rd party d-pads, or whatever the hell was on that "duke" controller for the original xbox.

Oops, I wasn't taking 3rd party controllers into account in my OP. Only 1st party controllers. Sorry, I should've mentioned that.

Owh, whuuatt...??
Sony's is the 2nd best after Sega's! Nintendo's way too small... The Sega systems got it right - nice, big & round. A shame they never mastered making good sticks. But Sony's D-pad (while admittedly a bit wierd) are the best size after them. Making the Dualshocks the best well rounded controller for multiple genre use. (XBox's is good for shooters, but little else...)
Btw, I could only ever play Guity Gear using the Dualshock's D-Pad, couldn't do it with the sticks.

PS4 one is outstanding. Atari 7800 (American release) is the worst ever created, followed by the N64.

Not a fan of either the Playstation or Xbox d-pads. The d-pad on the vita is nice though.

I mean the overall feel of the controller. I am not sure if I have ever used a "bad" D-pad. Nothing is bad after you used the 7800 controller.
