I've heard a rumor that emulators for the original Xbox are currently unavailable for some reason, and never have been. Is this true? If so, does anyone know why? I'm curious because I love the original Xbox with a passion.

Sadly, none of the Xbox emulators are in a fully playable state. Apparently, the system is both much more complex than it seems and there aren't many programmers interested in it, since most of its games were either released on pc or are compatible with the 360. It sucks, since many important games (I can think of Otogi 1&2 and GunValkyrie) aren't playable on the 360 neither were released on pc or any other system. For a more in-depth explanation, look at this post. If you want to see the current state of Xbox emulation, there's blueshogun's blog - this is the guy that kept CXBX going for a long time and made a huge contribution to the newer XQEMU: shogun3d-cxbx.blogspot.com.br/

Huh, that's so strange, given that the original Xbox's hardware is quite similar to that of a PC, or so I've heard. Wouldn't that make emulation easier? Well at any rate, thank you SO much for promptly answering my question. You've always been so knowledgeable when it comes to emulation, Cervantes. It's a real shame that not much work has been done on Xbox emulation, because there are a ton of great Xbox games out there that never got PC ports, meaning that the Xbox is the superior version in most cases (like with Destroy All Humans), so I can only imagine what kind of awesome mods could be developed for said titles. And I've always wanted to see a TAS of one of the Halo games.

It seems that emulation gets very difficult after Gen 5 with games getting more & more complex. I've never tried emulating beyond gen 4 myself. Don't recommend it either, as even if the emulation software runs the games successfully they typically will likely be dysfunctional in someway... e.g missing pieces here and there, prone to jamming up etc... Don't you have an original Xbox @smashbros...? I personally used to prefer original Xbox versions of games to PS2 whenever titles came out for both - primarily because of the Xbox's progressive scan option feature, meaning all games on the original Xbox could theoretically be played on progressive, whilst PS2 games required the option built into the game itself (meaning the availability of the feature depended on the discretion of the game developer... )

It's one of my favorite consoles of all time. But in regards to your comment above that, about how 5th gen+ consoles are seemingly more difficult to emulate: what about the Dolphin (Gamecube) emulator? I've heard nothing but praise for it. I think that if a good Gamecube emulator could be done, then a good Xbox or PS2 emulator could be done, too. Then again, I really don't know much about computer technology, and this is merely speculation on my part.

The Dolphin emulator is even good at emulating Wii games, so there's that. Also, when I tried the PS2 emulator, I remember it being pretty good - some games actually ran better on it than in the actual console, like ICO and SotC, with higher resolutions and (I'm sure they had) a better framerate.

That's interesting, because I've seen a lot of people on the web rant about how the PS2 emulator is highly inferior to the Dolphin emulator. Who should I believe? :?

Yeah, Dolphin is better, but I dont think Cervantes was saying that the PS2 one is better. He was saying some PS2 emulators are not bad at all, in fact they even improve some games over the originals. Ultimately if you have the real deal is a more valuable experience.

Yeah, sorry I just realized that he didn't say PS2 emulators were better. My bad.

Yeah, Nintendo emulators seem to be the exception, as both N64 and Gamecube have stable ones from what I hear - which is ironic, since it was those very same Nintendo consoles that were tough moded for piracy to begin with. Maybe having something to do with their relatively smaller libraries.
The PS2 library is much larger though (possibly the largest ever) - it won't be surprising if there were anomalies (or defects) in the running of specific games, possibly indicating instability when tested across the entire library as a whole. Higher framerate for one game might mean dysfunctionality for others somewhere.
But if you already have an original XBox, why would you be interested in emulating it?

The Project 64 runs most games well. In the past, before I even had a Hyperspin, I only had trouble with Yoshi's Story which was glitchy but maybe it was just the file, and of course Rogue Squadron which Project 64 isn't capable of running to begin with. Which surprises me because it does well with Majora's Mask.

But if you already have an original XBox, why would you be interested in emulating it? Good question! My answer: because emulation fascinates me. I love the idea of having access to mods and debug menus of classic console games from my childhood that I grew up on. I'm huge into the competitive Melee scene, and after seeing all the awesome mods that dedicated fans have made for it on PC, I've decided that emulation is something that I really want to learn about. With that said, I have never emulated a single game in my entire life. The reason I can't do it now (or can I?) is because I don't own a computer anymore. My old one went insane and died because of a deadly virus attack. I've considered building a new PC, but being the poor person that I am and taking the investment aspect (anti-virus software) into account, I just don't have the money for that now.

Just found this documentary on Xbox emulation on YT:
Haven't watched it yet but it's been very well received by the community. Thought you guys would like to see this.
