As I was building hobby game lists for fantasy Plug & Play systems I realized that the Dreamcast 2 actually exists, the only difference is that it lacks hardware, but the software platform is there. So I decided to write it down to see what you guys think. I find fascinating how solid the Dreamcast 2 actually is and how I wish this platform came with an actual console.

I have to add that this list was based on what would make sense for the system after considering the titles tendencies of previous Sega's consoles game libraries. Thanks to Sega sticking to other platforms after they left the console market, we can still see what their platform would actually look like if they had stayed in the same direction.

I'm sure I'm missing some games, but you can still see the Dreamcast 2 shine through these titles. You also have to consider this is just the main line, if the hardware was there, you can already imagine there would be other multi-platform games for it. The system would belong to the 7th generation of game consoles, and I would definitely have one.

Nah. I think the first Dreamcast is the single most overrated game console in history. Dead serious. All its best games have been ported and the controller is absolute shit.

Now I realize that a successor to the Dreamcast would probably improve on the original's design & controller quite a bit, so who knows, I might like it. After all, I absolutely loved the Genesis and the Saturn. As long as it had a good controller with enough buttons and kick-ass games, I would support it.

Canon Spike, and Giga Wing 1 & 2, I absolutely don't understand why they don't have HD ports by now. Those truly deserve it. The same goes for Mars Matrix, Zero Gunner 2, Gunbird 2, and Border Down. I bought a GameCube copy of Ikagura because I didn't have another option.

Radiant Silvergun, Rez, and Bangai-O are on the 360 but I don't have a 360.

The only way to get The House Of The Dead 2 on consoles is through The House Of The Dead 2 & 3 Return for the Wii.

I also have Nights Into Dreams on HD, but that one is from the Saturn. I wish more games were ported. The Dreamcast has a truly remarkable library.

I know people were not too much into the racing games of the system, but after playing Daytona USA (aka Sega Racing Classic) on HD, on 16:9, and with wheel support (Logitech G27), I really wish I could also play all the other many Sega published games on the Dreamcast the same way.

Those games are very real, and they are available, no reason to buy another system for them.

The issue is that if SEGA came out today and announced a new system, your lineup would definitely not match; but if you go by the make believe scenario under which the Dreamcast never failed, then a lot of things would be different in the game industry overall. While you mentioned Dragon's Crown, did you know Dragon's Crown would be a SEGA exclusive under this scenario? Odin Sphere would probably be under the same condition. Did you take into consideration that maybe neither Bayonetta nor F-Zero GX/AX would exist? What about SUCCESS? They're a failed company now, but their existence was the healthiest while SEGA was around.
In general it would have been a very different world for those involved, I could even question Mircrosoft's or Nintendo's survival in that market; so it's very hard to predict how games would even look like there.
Hell! Maybe Platinum would have been formed under Sony, becoming their in-house shitty game development studio.

The assumption is that if the D2 was real, many of those would have been exclusives.

Particularly the Sega published ones such as The House Of The Dead Overkill, Sonic Generations, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, or Virtua Tennis 4 for example.

I also didn't include JRPGs in general besides Valkyria Chronicles, and now that you mention it, the Atlus stuff like Persona, but they would have been there as well, and those are a lot.

Although the Hyperdimension Neptunia games would probably not exist, or at least they would have been very different than the ones we have now, particularly in the storyline. Unlike the Disgaea games that would probably have been the same.

This is wouod definitely be my type of console, particularly for the shmups and fighting games since I'm not into JRPGs. In fact I realize that list I posted is very similar to how my PS3 folders already look like.

Just like the Genesis that sold better in Europe over the SNES. I would say this would look more targeted to audiences outside U.S., particularly putting Japan first.

A similar situation with the Wii U that sold better than the PS4 in Japan but did bad in the West, and even after a whole year without any Wii U stock on the store shelves of Japan, the PS4 is still trying to catch up. Yet the PS4 is vastly dominating the Western markets even with very few first party releases.

You can tell these differences by the type of games they announce in Paris Games versus the ones they announce in U.S. conferences.

While in last year Paris Games they announced Tekken 7, Ace Combat 7, Street Fighter V, The King Of Fighters XIV, Nioh, etc., here you saw more things like Paragon, Battleborn, Titanfall, Overwatch, Call Of Duty, Destiny, etc..

Although nowadays both European and U.S. markets are becoming more similar, which is why systems like the Vita and even the Wii U are getting harder to sell.

So in my opinion as much as I like those games I would imagine the system would had been low in sales despite its extensive third party library. Either that or Sega would had found a way to shape up Western trends a little differently.

This hypothetical system would had belong to the 7th gen, so I imagine it would had come out around 2006 alongside the PS3 release, maybe even a little earlier in 2005 like the 360, and just like the PS3 is still getting titles, I imagine the D2 would still be getting some of those.

Shenmue 3 would had been long done by now. We would have a new Shinobi trilogy, Yakuza would had been bigger, and the system would also have more games in the realm of Sleeping Dogs.

I would go as far as to say that the abomination called Sonic Boom would not even exist.

In theory Bayonetta would had been a D2 exclusive just like Sonic Colors, and yes F-Zero GX would not exist the same way it is now, which is a shame because it is one of my all time favorites.

However we would probably have another version of F-Zero that may not had been as good, but still really good considering the GameCube's solid record with titles such as Melee, Metroid Prime, Wind Waker, and Double Dash.

On the other hand I do agree everything would had been very different, but this list I made is basically assuming the Dreamcast 2 is still real, just without hardware.

The Wii U is awesome and it is actually underrated. The only issue is the small library. But to me that's not an issue because you only have so much time.

I rather have a small library with easy to recognize awesome first party games than a big one where you have to dig deep to find the goods among multiple publishers.

Yes, like the overall library or not it's hard to argue that the Wii and Wii U aren't the best local multiplayer machines for their respective gens.

Then there's the recent games made for it like Sturmwind, DUX, and Gunlord (although gunlord was on the neo-geo as well)
Not to mention that there were games ported from the Dreamcast that ended up being worse on other consoles of the generation like CVS2, MVC2, and SF3

Several of those games mentioned WERE ported to other consoles, like Power Stone and HotD 2. Regardless, those games don't interest me so much. I'm not into role playing games.

Those you mentioned are not RPG. I'm not into RPGs either. I would say the Dreamcast is big on non-RPG games though. What are your favorite Dreamcast games? I imagine that if you like the Saturn and the Genesis there are at least Dreamcast games you like despite your dislike for its controller.

I would also add that many Dreamcast games are meant to be played with this controller instead:

Which in my opinion gives you a much better experience for certain games than the original controller, but that can also be said for other consoles that have arcade ports in their libraries.

The only one that was ported to another home console of that generation was HotD2 which came out around 4 years after the DC version. Also only 2 of those are RPGs. I'm not into RPGs either but that doesn't mean they're not proof that the DC had games.
