So, I'm going to start with Pokémon! That series came back to the spotlights, so let me strike while the iron is hot! Now, I'm not going to talk about the deeper aspects of this series. C'mon! We're all adults here, we all know where Pokémon came from and where you can see many of its ideas before they were executed ingame or in the shows. I'm going to tackle something much more specific.
- Mewtwo and Mew's Origins (contains spoilers for Pokémon Red/Green and Phantasy Star 2)
Of the original 150 pokémon, Mewtwo was the strongest, most unique and mysterious. Despite being the last challenge of the original Red and Green versions, several documents spread throughout the old mansion in Cinnabar Island reveal that the creature might have been the second in a group of two species, Mewtwo being the one that came after, even. Being the result of genetic manipulation, the source for its DNA would have been a creature from Guyana called Mew. This super cute cat-like poké was an element of uncertainty back then: is it part of the story or can I obtain it in any way? As it turned out, Mew was indeed coded in the games, Nintendo distributed the little magic kitty through events, there was a movie featuring both creatures, and people later found out it could be obtained through a reliable glitch.
But what if I told you those two aren't an original idea? What if they had been done before in some way?...
Well, that's where Nei and Neifirst come in. Nei was the protagonist's first companion in Phantasy Star 2, a cat-like girl of unknown origins (at least in the beginning of the game). The planet they live in has been suffering from strange behaviour of the weather and ecosystem controlling laboratories, which were being supervisioned by an almighty artificial intelligence. As the protagonist works his way to try and verify the issues in hopes of fixing the systems, his party comes accross another Nei who looks exactly like the one they know, except this one came before; she reveals Nei is part of a program in genetic engineering, however she was deemed a failure and proceeded to hijack the byosystems lab, creating the monsters the player has faced during the adventure.
If it isn't obvious, I'm going to go back to a few points. First, we are talking about cat-like creatures here, no questions, right? Second, the influence of genetic engineering, man-made life, is very important for the whole Mewtwo storyline, and the girls were created in the same fashion. Third, in both situations the player is supposed to have the first contact with the creature that came after. Fourth, the colors and tones used for them are similar. Fifth, the characers whose names share the numbered suffix also share a destructive personality, the ones who don't are understood to be super cool to hang out with. Sixth - and this one can be somewhat obscure - the Pokémon Mansion in Cinnabar Island is the closest thing to a Phantasy Star 2 dungeon, specifically places such as the Byosystems Lab (obviously), Climatrol and dams.
After this, can you even doubt that Mewfirst and Mew are related to Nei and Neitwo?
