Considering the games released each year, what is the year that impresses you the most?
To me, I would say 1998. I distinctly remember being impressed all the time by the releases being announced/reviewed by magazines, and every game looked like something completely original. Just look at some of the games released that year:
Panzer Dragoon Saga Zelda: Ocarina of time Metal Gear Solid Thief Resident Evil 2 Half-Life Pokémon Red/Blue Mega Man Legends Parasite Eve Tenchu The Dreamcast japanese release
I don't know what happened that year, but developers were really trying to stand out. The only sad thing was that the Saturn was on its way out, so that year I played it less - I spent more time on the PS1/N64. I played MGS and Zelda all the f****** time.

1995, the year the Saturn and PlayStation came out. I was lucky to get both that year and never had more fun gaming in my life then that year.

1987, the year following the Giftmas that I received my first NES.

2004 because of gta San andreas, burnout 3 takedown, need for speed underground 2, ace combat 5, and jak 3. San Andreas was the only game I wanted to play back then when it came out.

1994, 2004, & 2014. Not because of the games that came out those particular years, but because those years I had the most fun playing after accumulating decent size collections of really cool games.

Probably year 2000, nothing amazed me more than when I got a PS2 for Christmas as a kid. That stuff was wickedly awesome!

Can't really say for myself, but Cervantes is probably right about 1998. Whether or not you agree with that choice, 1998 is to video games as 1939 is to film. Just a string of major classics coming out in a row.

2001 will always be the greatest year of gaming in my mind. Melee and Halo: Combat Evolved are legendary and are among my favorite games ever made, and Pikmin & Rogue Squadron II were amazing too. The PS2 had some good ones that year too, like Smuggler's Run 2, Final Fantasy X, Medal Gear Solid 2 and Jak and Daxter, but you simply cannot top games like Halo CE or Melee. And of course there was Paper Mario 64, my favorite game of all time. I will always remember the insane hype 2001 created for gaming.
EDIT: And Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast, arguably the greatest Star Wars game of all time (and one of my favorite games of all time), was released that year too.

Holy crap thats tough. I mean, around 1998 I had gotten copies of Super Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger from a garage sale for a quarter a piece, that was pretty groovy....but I think when I got my Dreamcast in '99, thats when I was the most estatic...also Unreal Tournament had come out on PC

1994 is my favorite year for gaming. Final Fantasy VI, Super Metroid, The King of Fighters, Killer Instinct, Daytona USA, Mega Man X, Doom II, and the Super Game Boy came out in the US. I'm sure there were more games that came out, but these are just a few I can remember either buying or playing in the arcades. To me 1994 was a golden year for gaming.

Easy, 1997, Armored Core and Final Fantasy VII. There were many other great titles that came out that year as well but I didn't need to list both of the two I did let alone any more, one would've been enough technically but I can never get enough of them so I listed both.
