We all know that the original Xbox controller's D-pad is not very good. So I'm wondering if there are alternative controllers with superior D-pads for 2D games, or maybe superior in other ways. Are there any? Do you know of any?
I ask because I've noticed that there are a lot of really solid 2D fighting games on the Xbox (namely Capcom Vs SNK 2 & Street Fighter Aniversery), and it's a shame they can't be enjoyed to their full potential with the Xbox controller's crumby D-pad. :/

I'm sure you can find adapters for all MadCatz TE2s to be compatible, and you can't find anything pre-assembled better than the TE2s. You can only top them if you build one yourself or ask someone to do it for you, from the ground up.
But if you are not looking for anything custom, then TE2s are the best thing you can find for any console, all you need is the respective adapters.

I have a couple of Logitech wireless controllers, they are generally worse in design, but they're wireless. Personally the Duke and the S controller is unbeatable to 3rd party controllers.

Balder The main reason I'm even interested in getting a 3rd party controller is because I want a better D-pad for 2D gaming. The official Xbox controller D-pads are garbage (save for XBone) because they're pressure sensitive. I'm looking for one that isn't.

I am also interested in this search for a better D-pad. I play MVC2 and wish I had a better pad. Did you ever find a better alternative? Also, can you explain how pressure sensitive controllers hold back the pads potential? I don't know much about controllers.

Those are very good games Spirit Bomb. I always wanted Midway Classics Collection, but it was never offered digitally on the PS3. Have you tried buying a good Sanwa fightstick? At least when it comes to the Fighters you mentioned, those become extra fun using one.

Dual Shock 2 adapter for Xbox makes 2D gameplay as good on Xbox as it is on PS2, I have one and while my Xbox was still alive it was a game saver, it made unplayable games not only playable but as enjoyable as they can be at their best, everything from fighting games to platformers were suddenly fantastic because of a cheap simple cable, highly recommended.

I didn't even know this existed. I totally see the usage with figthing games, but for other types games the Xbox controller is superior.

Also, can you explain how pressure sensitive controllers hold back the pads potential? I don't know much about controllers. Sure bud I'd be happy to help out. Although I admittedly don't know much about the technology behind pressure sensitive D-pads, I do know that they function more like an analogue stick than an old school/traditional D-pad, like the ones on the NES, SNES, and standard Genesis controllers. Basically the harder you push down on an edge of the D-pad, the greater the input command will be. SO pushing down on it as hard as you can is the same as moving a thumbstick as far to one direction as it will go, I think. Does that make sense? I may have "maestro" in my name, but I admit I'm not exactly the best when it comes to teaching others..... And no, I have not bought any 3rd party controllers for my Xbox yet, but that's mostly because I haven't been looking for any lately, because I don't have a lot of money right now, so it's essential that I save every penny I earn. stratogustav I'm not interested in fight sticks/arcade sticks at all. I just hate using them so much. I don't know why, I just do. Maybe it's because I never went to arcades as a kid.

That would be great, except I hate the dualshock's D-pad just as much. XD Don't get me wrong though, it is objectively better for 2D games, so I do agree with you. It's just that I've tried playing SOR3 (Streets of Rage 3) on the Ultimate Genesis Collection for the PS3 with the DS3, and I couldn't play it even half as good as I did with the Genesis controller years earlier. It's simply too sticky to work for such a fast-paced game, which are the type of 2D games I'm into. It also is uncomfortable on my thumb. I'm in the minority in that I prefer the Gamecube Controller's D-pad over the PS2 & Xbox's. Sure it may be really small and oddly placed, but it performs better for fast paced 2D games, and feels better too. TBH I've always thought Nintendo's D-pads were excellent, second only in quality to Sega's.

I'll always hate the gaming industry for not using the Saturn d-pad as the standard. Nintendo's d-pads come close, but are still not quite there. Also, nice selection of 2d games, Spirit Bomb. By the way, I don't think any d-pad has real pressure sensitive capabilities, they're just badly designed, that's it. I know exactly what is this mushy feel you're talking about - when you press them, they don't "click", they just sink. I always feel strange when I go from my Saturn to any Microsoft/Sony controller (the d-pad on my 3DS feels ok though, so I'll give that to Nintendo).

I agree with Spirit Bomb, Nintendo D-Pads had always been the best in the industry, they had not been the best looking or the most ergonomic, but in terms of functionality they are better than anything Sony, Xbox and even Sega had ever produced. That age is over since the mid Wii U cycle when the patent expired, so now I guess any company has the ability to produce that level of high quality D-Pads. I do see Cervantes point about the Saturn D-Pad, in general Sega and even Sony always had more ergonomic D-Pads than Nintendo. The best case scenario is to have a D-Pad with the ergonomic feel of the Saturn and with the functionality of the GameCube. I'm sorry Balder but Xbox D-Pads had always been terrible. The one thing Xbox has that is superior over other controllers are the triggers. I know some people won't agree with me, but try the Xbox One triggers and then try the PS4's ones, the Xbox triggers win. The triggers on the PS4 are a lot better than the ones for the PS3, and yet not as good as the Xbox One triggers. I would say the perfect controller would have a Nintendo D-Pad with a Saturn ergonomic feel while also having the 6 bottoms layout, but with the top buttons as big as the bottom ones, the triggers like the Xbox One, the look of the DS4, but with the ability to swap the D-Pad with the left thumbstick whenever you want to, and the HD Rumble of the Switch along with the Switch's gyroscope and accelerometer responsiveness. It is not going to happen though.

stratogustav the Xbox One D-pad is great. The 360 is one of the worst ones, I agree.
