If there's one Nintendo title from the 5th gen that got a lukewarm response from gamers, it was definitely Yoshi Story.
I was shocked to learn that the game I cherished so much as a kid was in fact hated by many critics at the time of its release, and disdained by many Nintendo fans as well. Why did people hate it so much? Yes, it was a relatively casual title, but how is that necessarily a bad thing?
I love Yoshi's Story for its wonderful artistic design, vibrant color scheme, and imaginative worlds. I also disagree with the common criticism that the game is too easy, since the campaign technically has no linear path, and a good portion of the unlockable levels are significantly more difficult than the default courses for each chapter.
Honestly, I only have one real complaint about Yoshi's Story, and that is the very touchy controls. I found moving Yoshi in a precise manner to be very difficult the majority of the time, but then again the N64 joystick is widely regarded as one of the worst ever. Still, joysticks are never ideal for 2D platformers, so I feel that it was an odd choice by the developers.
So, now I ask: what do you think of the game? Is it as bad as Gamespot made it out to be? Is it an unworthy sequel to Yoshi's Island? Or do you think it's a wonderful children's game like I do?
Discuss.

It's a nice little spin-off game. With the graphics, story and difficulty, it was clearly meant for people under 10 and it didn't appeal to me when I first played it as a teenager.

I liked the game a lot actually, still do enjoy it from time to time.

Yeah, I liked it. The style really brought things home i.e. the flowers surrounding the screen, the multiple color yoshi's, the claymation style, the final boss battle. Outside of those though, Yoshi is one of those series I continue to see fail to take off in spite of having one of the most well received SNES releases. I have Yoshi's New Island on the 3DS after the Select price drop and I can't say I'm wild for it.

In terms of graphics and level design, most of the games in the Yoshi's Island series are lazy rehashes; Yoshi's New Island is probably the best example of that (or "worst", depending on how you look at it). Yoshi Story and Yoshi's Wooly World are the exceptions.

Even the visuals which I normally like in the Yoshi games just look bad to me in that one.

The visuals are okay but there are some core elements to the game that make it more of a chore than an exciting, surreal adventure; not to mention the game uses the same song in several renditions for the entire game. You'd think a Nintendo Select is supposed to be Player's Choice material, not some artifact of laziness!

Even R-Type on the PS3/360 had an option to switch between 3D/2D and regular/tilted view on the go. In this regard, maybe Nintendo are a little bit like Sega in terms of relying too much on Nostalgia over gameplay. I've watched footage of Donkey Kong Country Returns and it seemed a little dumbed down to me. Or maybe it's because I'm old.

Oh man, don't get me started on that Returns BS: there was hardly any classic Country goodness we've come to know and respect the Super Nintendo trilogy for. I have a great readup for you by a fellow member that references the flaws in the game's execution. 9 sucky sequels

Given all of its childish visual and audio themes, I feel like Yoshi Story would have been much better received if it had been rated EC (Early Childhood) instead of E. The babyish nature of Yoshi Story was one of the biggest complaints older gamers had about the game back when it was released and still have about the game. I feel like an EC rating really would have helped the game find the right audience. Plus, the idea of a first party EC rated Nintendo game would have been a rare novelty perfectly suited for the kid-friendly system.

I only recall seeing educational titles with that rating, but it's been so long. Also I'm not sure, did they do away with that rating or is it just rarely used anymore like the G rating for movies.

I wasn't a fan when it came out. I don't feel the need to revisit it.

UPDATE: It wouldn't matter anyways since I recently learned that the ESRB discontinued the EC rating in 2018 due to "underuse". Well, if underrated gems like Yoshi Story had been granted the EC rating, then maybe it would never have gotten discontinued, would it? Dumb that Nintendo didn't fight for it with Yoshi Story.
